We recently connected with Jack Mcentee and have shared our conversation below.
Jack, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
If you care enough about what you do for a living, I don’t think imposter syndrome ever goes away. In fact, I would make the argument imposter syndrome can fuel our careers. By no means do I think that feeling settled or comfortable in a career is a bad thing, but I also think that part of the beautiful thing about choosing a career path is the growth that comes with it. As a graphic designer, I am inspired every day by other designers and artists who are incredibly talented and it pushes me to want to become better at my craft. There are times I do feel like I’m not as talented as others, but I use that feeling as fuel to push myself to become better at what I do. And I’d like to think I wouldn’t be here in this part of my career if I didn’t have that fuel to begin with.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I run and operate my own design studio in Los Angeles called Jackentee Studio. I’ve had the opportunity to work with agencies, brands, college institutions, and musicians, including Koto Studio, ArtCenter College of Design, Porter Robinson, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Broods, and Studio Mococo to name a few. Whether I’m helping an organization or a musician on a creative project, my goal is always to bring the visions of my clients to life. To me, it’s magic.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think one of the most important things in the early stages of choosing a career path is trying out many different things. When you’re young, you have the luxury and time to be able to try out anything you’re interested in. I’m so thankful I was raised in a family that encouraged me to try as many things as possible growing up before ultimately deciding on being a designer. Aside from this, 3 skills that are most impactful specifically working in design are good communication, curiosity, and attention to detail.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking to connect with new people to collaborate with. As a graphic designer who specializes in visual identity and multimedia, I love taking on a wide range of projects from developing logos, graphic systems, motion graphics, websites, and campaigns. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the most kind and hard working people who equally share my passion for design and would love to continue working with similar like-minded people within the branding space and/or music industry.
