We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sherilynn Rauschkolb a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sherilynn, so great to have you sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our readers and so let’s jump right into one of our favorite topics – empathy. We think a lack of empathy is at the heart of so many issues the world is struggling with and so our hope is to contribute to an environment that fosters the development of empathy. Along those lines, we’d love to hear your thoughts around where your empathy comes from?
I think my empathy grew from a mix of experiences, some of them really tough. Growing up, I often felt isolated in my own family. It wasn’t that they didn’t care—they did in their own way—but I rarely felt truly understood. That feeling of being on the outside looking in stuck with me.
It wasn’t just at home, either. Among my peers, I didn’t feel particularly encouraged. I think I learned early on how lonely it can feel when you’re not cheered on or when people don’t seem to notice what’s special about you. That’s a hard lesson, but it also made me aware that so many other people are going through the same thing. It opened my eyes to the fact that everyone comes with their own set of life experiences, their own struggles, and their own silent battles.
One of the things that shaped me most was listening to people’s stories. I’ve always been fascinated by what others have been through, what shaped them, what broke them, and what keeps them going. I think it’s because I’ve always been sensitive to people’s feelings. It’s like I can’t help but feel what they’re feeling.
But deeper than that, I’ve always had this longing for people to feel seen, heard, and understood, because I know what it’s like not to feel that way. I used to—and still do—put myself in other people’s shoes. Sometimes, it was easier to imagine their experiences than to deal with my own. It’s strange, but in trying to understand them, I found a way to understand myself, too.
So, in a way, empathy became my survival tool, my bridge to connection. It’s a way to tell people, I see you. I get it. You’re not alone. And maybe it’s because I’ve often needed to hear those words myself.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an actor and producer with a passion for creativity and exploration. What excites me most about this work is the ability to step into someone else’s story and create characters that reflect real emotions and experiences, reminding others they’re not alone.
Currently, I’m collaborating on a thriller feature film with a local San Diego director—a project that’s challenged me to grow, both as an artist and a collaborator. I’ve recently wrapped two student films at San Diego State University, where I’ve had the chance to work with many emerging filmmakers. It’s been an incredible opportunity to expand my network while honing my craft, both in front of the camera and on set.
Alongside my acting work, I’m deeply committed to ongoing training and mentorship. I recently finished a series class with casting agent Amy Gossels for On Camera Acting and I am currently working with Andria Schultz, founder of Actors Brand Academy, whose guidance has reshaped my perspective on the industry and my role within it. The idea that my work could inspire someone to feel something real or see a part of themselves in a story is incredibly meaningful to me. That’s why I’m constantly learning, growing, and refining my craft.
My brand is all about connection, showing up, flaws and all, and hoping that others might see a part of themselves in my work. I hope to inspire and serve as a reminder that we’re all part of something bigger and that our stories, no matter how imperfect, truly matter.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that have shaped my journey as an actor and producer are emotional awareness, adaptability, and a commitment to growth. These aren’t just skills—they’re ways of living and approaching the craft that have made all the difference.
Emotional awareness is at the core of acting. It helps me understand my own feelings and those of others, which allows me to create authentic characters and connect deeply with audiences. Observing people, journaling, or exploring emotional intelligence through workshops are great ways to develop this skill. It’s all about being curious and nonjudgmental about human behavior.
Adaptability has been equally vital, especially in the unpredictable world of entertainment. Whether it’s stepping into a new role, taking on unexpected challenges, or learning from setbacks, staying flexible has helped me grow. My advice? Say yes to opportunities that push you outside your comfort zone and view every challenge as a chance to learn and improve.
Finally, a commitment to growth has been key to everything I’ve achieved. Acting requires constant study, practice, and a willingness to evolve. For those starting out, I’d say never stop learning—take classes, read scripts, watch performances, and seek feedback. Stay curious and open to new experiences because the more you invest in yourself, the richer your craft will become. Embrace the journey, show up authentically, and trust that every step, no matter how small will bring you closer to your goals.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My mentor, Andria Shultz has been pivotal, her guidance has completely transformed how I approach both my craft and the entertainment industry as a whole. She has an incredible ability to help me identify my mission and brand in a way that feels authentic and impactful. One of her greatest strengths is helping me understand my “Hero’s Journey” and showing me how to connect that story to the audiences I hope to inspire.
Beyond her guidance, Andria has connected me to invaluable opportunities and like-minded individuals pursuing similar paths. She not only provides mentorship but also creates a sense of community, surrounding me with others who share the same drive and vision. Her unwavering support and belief in my potential have been transformative, keeping me grounded and focused as I grow in my career.
