Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Irvin Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Irvin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Thank you for taking the time to interview me. I must admit that being the only one in the room who looks like me can be challenging. I remember a specific instance during my time at iHeartMedia where I was the only person of my background. Initially, it felt intimidating, but I focused on being flexible and resilient. I made it a point to communicate clearly and build relationships with my colleagues, which helped me gain their respect and trust. By remaining confident and being someone that they could rely on, I was able to contribute effectively to the team’s success. This experience taught me the importance of embracing diversity and using it as a strength to achieve my goals.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the founder and host of The Grizzly Podcast. I interview various people on my show and take charge of scheduling the guests and editing the episodes. The show is exciting because I dedicate time to learning about my guests and sharing their experiences and achievements with my listeners and viewers. My goal is to inspire others to pursue their dreams by highlighting these incredible stories.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Resilience: One of the most impactful qualities in my journey has been resilience. Facing challenges and setbacks is inevitable, but the ability to bounce back and keep pushing forward has been crucial. For those early in their journey, I advise developing a mindset that views obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow. Practice staying positive and determined, even when things get tough.
2. Effective Communication: Another key skill has been effective communication. Whether it’s interviewing guests on my podcast or collaborating with colleagues, being able to clearly express ideas and listen actively has made a significant difference. To improve this skill, focus on practicing active listening, seeking feedback, and continuously working on your verbal and written communication abilities.
3. Time Management: Managing my time efficiently has been essential, especially when balancing multiple responsibilities like scheduling guests and editing episodes. For those starting out, I recommend prioritizing tasks, setting clear goals, and using tools like calendars and to-do lists to stay organized. Developing good time management habits early on can help you stay on track and reduce stress.
By focusing on these three areas, you can build a strong foundation for your journey and navigate challenges more effectively.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle I’m currently facing is overcoming a bad breakup. Earlier this year, I lost the love of my life and my best friend, which has been a significant emotional hurdle for me. To overcome this challenge, I’m focusing on several key strategies:
1. Allowing Myself to Grieve: I’m giving myself the time and space to process my emotions. It’s important to acknowledge and accept the feelings of sadness and loss rather than suppressing them.
2. Seeking Support: I’m surrounding myself with supportive friends and family who can provide comfort. Talking to people who care about me helps me feel less alone during this difficult time.
3. Self-Care: I’m prioritizing my mental and physical well-being. This includes engaging in activities that I enjoy, maintaining a healthy routine, getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising.
4. Staying Positive: I’m trying to maintain a positive outlook and view this challenge as an opportunity for personal growth. I remind myself that healing takes time and it’s okay to take things one step at a time.
5. Taking Responsibility for My Actions: I’m recognizing and accepting my own mistakes, which has helped me see my part in the relationship’s issues. I’ve also found ways to improve and become a better partner moving forward. I’m hopeful that my ex-girlfriend and I will reconcile, but for now, I’ll continue to work on myself and will remain patient by giving her space and trusting God’s plan.
By focusing on these strategies, I’m working towards overcoming this challenge and moving forward in a healthier and more positive direction.
