We were lucky to catch up with Javier Lozano recently and have shared our conversation below.
Javier , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience is a product of the environment I grew up in and the people around me throughout it all. My mom played a big part for sure. When I was young we didn’t have much, but she always made sure we had what we needed and always kept a positive attitude throughout it all. The neighborhood taught me how to navigate through obstacles. My friends have helped a good amount as well and having people you can count on can make all the difference.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Im a film photographer focusing on portrait and street photography. Got my start in the summer of 2023 and immediately fell in love with the art form. My style is largely influenced by old noir films and photographs. I love to capture what someone is feeling or wants to portray while also making them feel good about themselves. Ive also put together a collaborative art project called The Yearbook which is on its second run. The projects brings together 24 local artists in order to showcase their art while bringing people from different backgrounds together.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Firstly don’t be afraid to fail, its going to happen, just move on and learn from it. Be able to take constructive criticism in a positive manner, especially early on while still learning and mastering the art. Lastly have fun with it, bend the rules and do it for yourself first and foremost.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Im always looking for artists and musicians to collaborate with, as well as other photographers.
