Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marissa Jean. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marissa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I feel that I have learned to be resilient since a young age. I have always been very in tune with myself and attuned to my life around me. I knew when something felt right and okay, and when it did not, even if it could not get better because I was not the one in control I had to learn to adapt to conditions, as we all do growing up, and thankfully I chose resilience instead of accepting supression.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The more into performing I pursue, and become successful at that full time, the more I remember why I started in the first place. Because to me, that was my gift I was given from above as a way to serve my brothers, sisters, and neighbors around me. The longer this pursuit of a career for me goes on, the more grateful I am that I stuck it out when it was full of obstacles. It was worth every effort, and I feel that way about every effort I have ever done in my life, FOR my life. And, the lives around me, of course.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Wow. I would say it had nothing to do with career-based techniques at all. Haha! Everything that progressed me forward in the best way came from practices I had aquired to remain true to myself along the way. I feel that being a good human only makes you even better performers. Not good, meaning morally, but digging into the depths of what it means to be human. The hardships, aches, hard stuff as well as easy, light, blissful parts. All of it combined is where story telling lies. And you don’t want to LIE in the story, right? Because the audience will know… because they ARE a real human, living a real human experience. So your existence needs to matter, and be exactly what you need for you, so when you perform, it can be TRUE.
For me, that looked like using my resources to keep a steady balance, since the balance is always rocked by the great wind of life’s challenges from day to day! Haha! My resources to remaining as I am come every morning as soon as the sun rises. It comes in reflecting through meditation and connection. Moving my body since it is my medicine. Using my voice to fight off the natural suppression that we have adapted/gotten used to, unfortunately. Fighting off the ‘norms’, and remembering that uniqueness is our true way of BEing.
And all of THAT, for me… sounds exactly what a performer does to warm up and show UP! So I think it is amazing that I choose to do that for ME first, before the career I chose.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
If you are a parent, the MOST impactful thing you can do, IS ASK QUESTIONS. Care enough to love your child the way THEY need to be loved and cared for. You could be going above and beyond with a huge amount of effort that they actually never even cared about or needed. It could be way more simple, or they could need more in other areas. If you care, care the way they need. We aren’t the same with how we receive, and it is very obvious when there is a disconnect.
Our inner childs either grow up to need nurturing, or children before they grow up need to be supported fully. Support them for THEIR life, not a life you picture for them. They have a picture in their head, if they are so lucky, so help them put it into reality so we can all reach our potential.
