We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Blue a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
That’s a really good question ! If you asked me 5 years ago to rate my self confidence level on a scale of 1 to 10 when I started my job as a photographer, I would have said 3/10. I knew I wanted to become my own boss, start my own business, find clients, make money and live from my passion but at that stage I had no self-esteem and confidence because I had no experience in the profession.I hadn’t learned at shcool how to start a business and even if I had a few years of practice in photography, I had not found my own style yet and I just didn’t know how to become someone in this huge jungle of entrepreneurs !
So I would say that I developed my self-esteem thanks to all my clients through the years because they would leave amazing feed back about my work, they would recommend my work to their friends and family and step by step it gave me a huge boost of confidence. I started to think that my work wasn’t bad and even if I still had a law self-esteem I could just “pretend” to know what I was doing and guess what ? It worked ! So if you wanna know my little secret to achieve self confidence, you will have to remember this moto : “fake it until you make it”. Faking the fact that I believed in myself helped me in so much ways. I would go on my first photoshoots not knowing what to do with a big impostor syndrome but it didn’t matter as long as my fake “girl boss face” would show all day long. And little by little as I gained confidence, I became the girl boss. The real one.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a French photographer who specializes in weddings but I also shoot pregnancies and families. I’ve always been kinda obsessed with love stories, happy endings, and everything that’s romanticized. So I decided to become the one who romanticize people’s life and especially their big day by capturing those joyful and emotional moments.
I’m one of those hypersensitive persons so of course I need to feel energies and emotions in my job, that’s what makes my photos authentic. I could choose a boring job that provides me stability, normal hours, free weekends maybe but hey ! Would I be crying of joy every saturday when witnessing a beautiful couple getting married ? Absolutely not. Would I be getting warm emails / texts from my clients that literally means the world to me when they receive their photo gallery ? Nope. So yeah, I’m proud to say that my high school favorite hobby became my full time job and I think I’m a very lucky person as I’m able to write those words today.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say that the 3 things that helped me become a photographer / business owner are :
1. Learning how to use social medias. 90% of my clients come from Instagram and that’s the platform I use the most for communication. We live in an era where social medias are ESSENTIAL for growing a community and find new clients. Don’t be afraid to use them and LEARN how to use them. It is not only about posting anything and everything, it is about understanding how the algorithm works, finding your niche and be regular on posts, reels and stories. Those platforms are also constantly evolving, so it is important to always making sure you’re up to date. My advice is don’t be afraid to follow the trends, that’s how it works and it’s what will help you get into the game if you’re not already in it.
2. Vision and Storytelling
Developing a unique vision and storytelling approach is crucial for making your work stand out. Vision is about how you see the world, the emotions you convey, and how your perspective translates into your images. To build this, practice intentionality in your shots: before pressing the shutter, ask yourself what story or mood you want to convey. Studying the work of photographers whose style resonates with you can also help you identify elements that speak to your own vision. A great exercise is to pick a theme and create a small series around it, focusing on consistency and emotional impact.
3. Resilience. Photography, like any creative profession, can be a journey full of highs and lows. Rejection, creative blocks, or difficult projects are inevitable, and resilience helps you move forward despite these challenges. Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about learning from each experience and letting it shape your growth as an artist.
To build resilience, try to view each setback as part of the process. When a photo shoot doesn’t go as planned, reflect on what could improve next time, rather than dwelling on what went wrong. With client feedback or critiques, approach it as a tool to refine your style, rather than a personal judgment. Another way to strengthen resilience is to work on personal projects that reignite your passion when client work feels draining. These projects can remind you why you started, reinforcing your love for the craft.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
An ideal client for me is someone who is genuinely drawn to my style and values my unique perspective. They choose me not just for a photography service but because they resonate with my creative approach, my way of seeing and capturing moments, and my aesthetic in editing. They understand the value of my work and are willing to invest in it, focusing on the art rather than the price.
This client also connects with mypersonality and appreciates the creative freedom I bring to the process. They trust my judgment entirely, from the way I compose and capture to how I edit each image, respecting my creative choices without questioning or negotiating your rates. As I’m part of some personal moments such a weddings, pregnancy, family reunions, they need to fully trust me. The more I become close to them to better it is for our photoshoot sessions !
