Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin Brunson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Justin, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I think being tough skinned is very important. Growing up in the Midwest, you are taught to be resilient, not to give up and to keep pushing. If you don’t secede at first try and try again till you do. Resilience is something that is inside of everybody, but some people are just never pushed and give up to easily. This is helps me and my culinary and professional career as the best way to learn anything is to mess it up and try to make it perfect over and over and over until you achieve perfection.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am the owner of Brunson Meat Co. in Denver, Colorado. We specialize in Noble mold, aged meats and world class bacon. I’ve been developing a new style of dry aging meats that I inoculate the Primals with the noble mold strains which gives the meat an amazing popcorn, brown butter and hazelnut flavors. It’s unlike anything out there. Our world class bacon is made with the old technique of dry curing we rub the pork bellies with my special blends of salt, sugar and spices and let it sit for 10 days before we put it through a smoking process with sweet Applewood. I’m really just a meet geek who loves to share great food with people
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Never give up
People need to realize that nothing will be perfect. The first time remember the first time you rode a bike.? I’m sure it ended in a crash. Everything in life is like that. You just gotta pick yourself up wipe off the dirt and try again. If it’s in relationships, business or cooking.
Do your best
I look back at my life and asked myself if I did my best? I have definitely done my best 90% of the time. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve looked back on the 10% of the time I didn’t do my best and I wish I would’ve pushed myself to do better. Give everything 100%!
Be kind
I think being kind to others is one of the most important aspects of life. Do acts of kindness, treat people to respect push yourself to be kind when you don’t want to be. It takes just as much energy to be happy and kind as it does to be a dick. People respond to kindness and kind people in a different way they will work harder for you. They will respect you and and they will follow you..
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love to collaborate with people I think collaboration brings a lot more to the table than one mind driving. The people like to collaborate with our open minded, realize that there is more than one way to doing something for an amazing result. I like to work with people who are fun, happy and artistic. People don’t know that things don’t always go the right way and that’s how you handle those situations that can make or break them. Justin@brunsonmeats.com
