We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Suzie Strosin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Suzie below.
Suzie, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
As a casting director, effective communication is at the heart of everything I do. It stems from my passion for connecting with people and understanding their stories. I’ve always been naturally curious, which allows me to ask meaningful questions and truly listen to the answers. Over time, working with diverse personalities—from talent to producers—has taught me how to adapt my communication style to fit a variety of situations.
I’ve also learned to balance professionalism with approachability. In casting, it’s crucial to make people feel comfortable enough to open up while also clearly conveying expectations and providing constructive feedback. Being a mom has further sharpened my communication skills—teaching me patience, empathy, and the value of clarity. Ultimately, my ability to communicate effectively comes from being genuine, listening actively, and always striving to ensure others feel heard and valued.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I specialize in casting for unscripted and reality television, as well as branded content, commercials, and development projects. My passion lies in collaborating with production companies to bring new ideas to life and transform unique concepts into captivating television series.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of casting some incredible shows. My portfolio includes E!’s Botched, TLC’s My Strange Addiction, Peacock’s Vanderpump Dogs, Netflix’s The Ultimatum and Queer Eye, and multiple seasons of Bravo’s iconic Housewives franchises. I am also a proud member of the Television Academy and the Casting Society of America (CSA).
For me, casting is all about connecting with people and uncovering compelling stories that align with a show’s vision. My team and I are dedicated to discovering exceptional talent, crafting stand-out casting interviews, and creating memorable biographies that highlight each talent’s unique story. These elements help networks and production companies connect with the talent we present and effectively share their story with network executives and producers.
Whether it’s launching a brand-new series or continuing a fan-favorite franchise, the opportunity to help shape a show’s success is an incredible honor and an exciting journey to be a part of.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that have been the most impactful in my journey as a Casting Director have remained constant throughout my career: connecting, outreach, and storytelling. As a Casting Director, I connect with people on a personal level, help them tell their own stories, and find the right characters for the right programs. Casting also requires a tremendous amount of organization and diligence. Staying on top of every detail—from schedules and interviews to pitch deadlines and adapting to client needs—is just as critical as the creative process itself. It’s a balance to ensure every project runs smoothly and successfully.
1. Connecting with People: At the heart of casting is understanding people—their stories, personalities, and what makes them unique. Building genuine relationships is essential, not only with talent but also with producers and networks. These connections create a foundation for successful casting.
2. Finding the Best Talent: One of the most rewarding aspects of casting is uncovering people who might not normally consider being on a TV show. Thinking outside the box is critical—sometimes the best talent is found in unconventional places or through unexpected approaches. We often find people who live “off the grid” or aren’t active on social media, so developing creative strategies for outreach is essential in unscripted casting.
3. Storytelling: It’s important to identify how their story fits within a broader narrative. This requires a strong sense of what makes a compelling person and how they’ll engage an audience. I ask myself questions like: How will they be memorable? What will they bring to the show? Why are they a great fit for this series? These considerations shape the storytelling process in casting.
My advice to anyone early in their journey or aspiring to work in casting: Think outside the box, don’t be afraid to take risks, and remember that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Whether you’re networking, developing your creative instincts, or exploring unconventional ways to find talent, the key is to remain passionate and persistent.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, I am always looking to collaborate and love connecting with people who have a dream of being on their own show, want to be part of one of the shows I’m casting, or even have a great idea for a show! Since I cast a wide variety of unscripted content, there’s always an opportunity for someone with a unique story, talent, or concept.
