Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kalsang Chomphel And Tenzin Tseyang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kalsang Chomphel and Tenzin Tseyang, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
We are both children of second generation Tibetan refugees who were politically stateless for most parts of their lives and who have undergone multiple displacement in their lives – unwillingly to begin with, and then willingly at later times when it came to the question of survival and to make it in their lives. So inherently, resilience is something we have both inherited from our parents and family, having been equal participants in this journey of survival with them. Rising back up from the ashes is what has been normalized for us. There is no other way for us than to be resilient and strong.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Kalsang Chomphel is a Tibetan potter/ceramicist/artist, and Tenzin Tseyang is the business manager and executor of the brand that is the Kalsang Pottery.
Kalsang makes high quality handmade pottery including functional kitchen artware as well as decorative pieces that help enhance beauty in the sacred place we call our homes. He nurtures an ardent interest in traditional Japanese, Korean and British cultures of pottery, yet believes strongly in the development of contemporary styles and forms of the craft. Coming from an immigrant refugee background, Kalsang’s inspiration in his work reflect multiple displaced identities of having traversed life in a continuous journey absorbing influences from various cultures, yet at the same time they are deeply rooted in his core personal artisan sensibility. Kalsang’s vessels have the soft underpinnings of being stimulated from a greater cause yet they are indisputably distinct in holding their space and purpose in the universe.
Tenzin is Kalsang’s chief support and dreams of presenting Kalsang Pottery in every household to accentuate your art of daily living, In order to create solitary breathing space and private common ground between the artist and his inspirations, Tenzin manages daily operations of Kalsang Pottery.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in our journey were: first, our confidence in our craft of pottery making and our craft of story telling; second, our consistency in our effort to strive through hurdles in life through thick and thin; and third, our belief, support, and love for each other. We are each other’s best friends.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
We truly believe that it takes a village to make a man successful. In our journey through success, we have had so many help on the way as well. Our first ingredient for success was our strong belief in ourselves and our craft. Once we had that, we needed to gain trust of our clients and customers. When we worked with our truest intentions to present customers what they wanted, we had their continued support throughout our journey. Many of our customers are repeat customers. Once you buy one of our product and start using it at your home, you will surely come back to us to buy more. So over the years, we have built a loyal customer base who enjoy quality and beauty in their lives. So we would say that our customers and clients have been our biggest strength that helped us overcome obstacles.
