Meet Dr Sarah Chaudhry

We recently connected with Dr Sarah Chaudhry and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr Sarah, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

There have been so many classrooms, work, and social settings where I was the only one who looked different: darker hair, darker skin tone, and a different ethnic background. Whenever I am the odd one out, I always remember two important things my dad used to say to me. One, if there is no seat at a table for you, do not beg for a seat at that table; instead, sit at your own table, and have them want to sit at yours. And second, in a box full of crayons, if there are only yellow crayons and you are the only red one, you stand out because you are different and special; embrace it and see it as proof that you are special. I always remember his words whenever I am the only one who looks like me. I won’t pretend it has been easy being the odd one out; however, I have never let it discourage me or make me feel less than. Instead, I have embraced it as my superpower, I am special.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have my own telehealth mental health practice called Telechats Therapy. My goal was to create a practice where I would want to go for therapy—a place where therapists are always up to date with the latest research and advancements. As I progressed in my education, I became increasingly aware of the incredible possibilities for healing without relying on medication. It blew my mind! Why aren’t more people practicing and learning how to fix the root issues rather than using the band-aid approach of temporarily masking them with medication?

Mental health has made remarkable advances in just the last five years, with new modalities that can truly transform lives. Whether it’s trauma, anxiety, or depression, these methods can help you heal and overcome without medication.

At Telechats Therapy, my practice isn’t about offering a quick fix. It’s about diving into the root issue and resolving it so you never have to struggle with it again—because I believe that healing is possible!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three skills that have always helped me are never being afraid to step outside the box, always having a good mentor by my side, and never thinking I know everything. Every expert becomes an expert through countless trials and errors. If we don’t step outside our comfort zone, how will we discover new ideas?

I’ve had to trust myself and what I believed in, even if it meant standing alone. Even when I failed, I knew growth was part of the process. I never want to think I know everything or that I’m the best at anything, because once I believe I’m the best, there’s nowhere else to grow. I want to keep learning because the world is constantly discovering new ways of doing the same thing.

For anyone starting a new journey: don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Even if you feel like you’re alone, that’s okay—trust yourself and trust what you believe in. Success will follow, as long as you continue to believe in yourself.

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client is anyone who wants to change their life and believes change is possible. As long as they are ready to face any demons like trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, addiction, or struggles with self-worth, and as long as they are willing to show up, we can change your life. No one has to face the challenges in their life alone or think they have to carry the weight for the rest of their life. I will work hard to get to the root issues and help them overcome them, as long as they are showing up for themselves. Therapy isn’t a one-sided process; it’s about working together to untangle the root issues and create meaningful change. They do not have to have it figured out — they just need to believe in the possibility of healing and be willing to take that first step.

My ideal client is someone who’s ready to let go of the belief that they’re not good enough, not lovable, or not worthy. Because it is not true—they are. However, until they fully embrace that they are good enough, we will continue to do everything to change that belief. They need to trust in the process and know that, together, we will find their happiness.
