Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Diamond Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Diamond, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My hair journey started on the Upper east side of New York, and it really helped solidify my strong work ethic. I have always been a hard worker, and those first few years of training really honed my skills, and tested my patience, but my passion for hair and desire to be successful was the driving force to keep me laser focused. I also had the privilege of working with some extremely talented and successful hairstylists who demonstrated exceptional work ethic, and they inspired me to adopt the same habits.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m extremely lucky and incredibly grateful to have the career that I have curated for myself. I love the freedom that comes with being a freelance hair stylist. Every set I collaborate on with other creatives is an opportunity to have a vision or idea brought to life in photos. I live for the variety and absolutely love the flexibility of freelancing. I get to work with mega brands like Nike and Cash App just to name a few. It also lets me be a part of editorial shoots with makeup brands like NYX and Fenty Beauty. I’ve done it all from traveling to Cancun, Mexico for a single day photo shoot to a week-long video production in the desert. Every new opportunity is a true blessing, and it keeps me excited and keeps things feeling new. Speaking of Fenty Beauty, if you haven’t tried Rihanna’s new brand of hair products, Fenty Hair, I highly recommend you give them a try. You should start with the ‘Maintenance Crew”. The shampoo is extremely moisturizing and the conditioner hydrates and repairs dry brittle hair. The 5 in 1 leave in has a built in heat protectant and leaves the hair shiny & feeling strong after heat styling. Living in California in the dry winter months, it really brought my hair back to life. Fenty Hair really is the complete package.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When working on set with other collaborators I feel that three of the most important things that worked for me was anticipating the needs of the everyone involved on the team. You have to be thinking ahead and paying attention to everything that is going on. Editorial sets have so many moving parts and it’s important to see what someone else may have overlooked.
Secondly being on time and ready to work is crucial to being a valuable team member. I make it my priority to be on time to every set that I work on. Every part of the day is timed down to the minute so in order for the day to go smoothly it starts with you showing up on time and prepared for anything.
Last and most importantly as a professional hairstylist, I take great pride in having a clean and well-organized kit which is a reflection of my attention to detail and in turn helps me be always on my game. I’m well known on set for the one that has everything in their kit. On shoot days you can never be too prepared. I bring EVERYTHING, not just brushes, combs and blow dryers. I once worked on a set and the talent didn’t have deodorant. In my kit I just happened to have some, and she was so grateful that I was able to provide that for her. This type of preparedness makes you memorable and can almost guarantee you to get noticed and called back and recommended for future job opportunities.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to work with other creatives and help curate a team that is well versed in the freelance, editorial, creative world. I would love to link up with photographers, videographers, and makeup artists and PR teams. If I could create a dream team, they would be open to new ideas and meeting new people. being vulnerable and ready to create a story and tell a story that no one is telling today. I’m in the era of moving slow and intentional. I want a team that is intentional in the story that is being told. I’m not sure what the story is but I want to be part of telling it!!
