Meet Phil Dumontet

We were lucky to catch up with Phil Dumontet recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Phil with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

When I was 11 years old, I started running and the sport has become a lifelong passion
for me. Just like being a business leader, running requires a high amount of work ethic.
The lessons I learned training and racing inform my decision-making and my drive as a
CEO, and have allowed me to pursue a purpose-driven career.

Phil Dumontet is an entrepreneur, avid athlete, and running industry leader.
Phil serves as the CEO of Brooksee. Brooksee is the endurance event production and
technology company behind the Las Vegas Marathon, Portland Marathon, Mesa Marathon, and
REVEL Race Series, as well as the industry-leading timing technology, Laurel, which enables
the first live participant tracking down to the tenth of a mile.
Before taking on this role, Phil founded the award-winning Boulderthon, serving as the signature
Boulder Marathon for the community. The race drew nearly 7,000 runners from all 50 states and
18 countries in only its third year, making it one of the fastest-growing races in the country. The
race sold out and became Colorado's largest fall race series in its second year. In 2023,
Boulderthon was named one of the Top 5 Best Half Marathons in the United States by Active,
and in 2024, USA Today named its 5K the #5 best in the country and its half marathon #8 best.
Some of Phil’s notable accomplishments include:
● Named to Forbes 30 Under 30
● Boulder Valley 40 Under 40
● 17-Time Marathoner Ranking Top 110 American Finisher at NYC Marathon in 2023, PR
2:42
● Contributor to The Washington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, Business Insider, Fast
Company, and Inc. Magazine.
Phil splits his time between Boulder, CO and Salt Lake City, UT. When he’s not working or
training, he can be found spending time with his wife Alexa, son Dante, and daughter Chiara.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m honored to serve as the CEO of Brooksee, the endurance event production and service
company behind some of the most exciting running events in the nation and the technologies
that make them come to life.
Brooksee is the parent company of the Las Vegas Marathon, Portland Marathon, Mesa
Marathon, and REVEL Race Series. In 2024, Brooksee produced nine events and was the
official timing provider for 125 additional endurance events from running to cycling and beyond.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Living and leading with the following principles have made me a stronger and more
enduring professional.
The first is to show up enthusiastically to all opportunities and challenges in your work.
When you approach your path with a positive attitude and the goal to motivate others,
you “refill your own cup” – leaving any situation more energized and excited to keep at
it.
Next, don’t sweat the small stuff. It can be easy to lose momentum if we focus on the
hiccups and pitfalls we encounter along the way. Do all you can to focus on long-term
goals and the big picture, and you’ll find you gain endurance and focus.

Finally, stay persistent. The folks you see at the height of success are all unique in their
abilities, but they have one thing in common: they kept showing up when others didn’t.
Despite falls along the way, they got back up and kept the course.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

2024 was an exciting year for our team. We launched a brand new event, the Las
Vegas Marathon, and entered a new era for the Portland Marathon as its new owners.
The Portland Marathon saw record attendance, and the Las Vegas Marathon far
exceeded the expected inaugural field size, breaking the company record for
attendance at an inaugural event. Brooksee’s full portfolio of events saw growth
anywhere from 9-29%.
This year, sponsors and partners have included brands like Fleet Feet, Amazon,
Toyota, Peloton, nuun, Meow Wolf, Frontier Airlines, Athletic Brewing, and many more.
We’ve also seen huge growth for our Laurel timing technology, the world’s first AI-driven
real-time tracking platform. The technology brings a new level of data to the sport of
running, unlocking personal bests for runners with real-time ranking stats in-race, higher
levels of on-course support, and a birds-eye view of all participant locations on course
for race organizers.
Laurel has been deployed at nearly 200 events this year, including the Ragnar Relay
Series, Seattle Marathon, and Every Women’s Marathon, with that number expected to
keep growing. Our timing and technology division has more than doubled in size this
year, as we continue to power and support premier endurance events across the nation.
