We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Gall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resiliency. That word has a unique meaning for me, because it can carry both a positive and negative connotation. My current resiliency is founded on a bouquet of experiences that, while sometimes thorny and thistled, have bloomed into my ability to thrive.
Growing up, becoming resilient was a necessary survival strategy. Circumstances far outside of my control led to a childhood of abuse, and at 10 years old the passing of my mother. Resilience then looked like hoping for the next “good day” until enough bad ones had passed.
Resilience in my early adulthood took on a new meaning, as the focus became surviving the mental and emotional consequences of an unstable childhood; personally and professionally. I knew becoming the person I wanted to be required work, so I did. In therapy, at my 9-5, eventually with my daughter; born when I was 23.
Eventually all things paid off and personally I felt I reached a calm and fulfilling life. I FELT resilient. I wasn’t handed a good life, I made one.
Professionally, Covid flipped my world as I had established myself in the automotive Business Development industry and had to leave a long term career to be with my – by then- two kids.
Again, I was stable, but needed another tier of resilience as nothing was known.
That is where I got into fitness. After a not so short covid, I started teaching and training part time. Until it got to a point that my husband and I realized this “get through COVID” business was working- personally, financially and for our family balance.
So I decided to GO. Fast forward to now, it was hard work and the resiliency I had forged that allowed me to get through this too and be successful. And this version of resilience has been fun, and fulfilling and extremely gratifying. It has allowed something wonderful to grow from its past versions; but they all got me here. 🙂
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a full time Personal Trainer and Nutritionist. I offer group classes to our growing community.
Part of my passion is that fitness is all sizes and shapes- anyone can do it. There isn’t one method or path, just the one we find sustainable for ourselves and our health. I have clients ranging from 25-75 with a variety of conditions and All of them have found the ability to exercise and better their health; even through modifications when necessary.
My facility is also child friendly. As a mom I recognize we do not always have the ability to exercise with others because of childcare restrictions. I hope to ease the stress of that as well as expose our little ones to wellness and movement sooner!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Attitude, commitment to a process and the ability to accept that things are what they are- not everything has something to do with me…
In the beginning it’s easy to waste time overthinking your idea, waiting to be ready or wondering if it’s the right time/thing/idea. Just start. It will work if you do. One step at and time with the moto “I don’t know the exact path but I’m going in the direction.”
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
While my childhood could be described as messy, my father was a dedicated and hard worker. His ethic was contagious and he never complained.
