We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Miley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Working in the bridal makeup artistry field, there’s a lot of other talented artists. With social media and seeing everyone’s highlights and how they’re killing it, it can make it hard to not fall victim to imposter syndrome. I overcome imposter syndrome by choosing to focus on myself. I can see other artists work and let it inspire me, but one day I realized their talent doesn’t take away from my own. Whenever I feel like imposter syndrome is creeping in, I always go back and read reviews of my past clients.. Their raving reviews including such kind words of their experience with me as their makeup artist and how much I made them feel beautiful is super powerful in helping me see my own value and what I bring to the table. I reflect on the impact I made on those women on their special day and try to always stay focused on new goals and constantly improving my skills and experience for my clients. When I’m busy working hard on my own work, it’s easier to not get distracted with others and let imposter syndrome creep in.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’ve been a professional makeup artist for 11 years. My journey began in the cosmetology industry, doing hair in a salon for almost five years as I pursued additional training to become a certified professional makeup artist. As my passion for makeup grew, (as well as my makeup clientele) I decided to leave the salon life and start my journey as a full-time makeup artist.
My first wedding experience was a pivotal moment for me. I found immense joy in helping brides feel their most beautiful on one of the biggest days of their lives. What started as a single opportunity blossomed into a thriving business, fueled by word of mouth, and before I knew it, I was fully booked with weddings every weekend.
While I never initially aimed to specialize in bridal makeup, I can honestly say that this path has brought me profound fulfillment. Being able to help women not only look, but feel their most beautiful on one of the biggest days of their lives is an honor I can’t truly describe. When I hand them the mirror and see their face light up, or even try to hold back tears of joy at how beautiful they feel, it’s the best feeling in the world and a privilege I cherish. My heart is so full getting to be the one to help them feel beautiful on their special day and knowing that I play a part in making their day unforgettable.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey as a bridal makeup artist, I believe three qualities have been particularly impactful: adaptability, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to continuous learning.
Adaptability: The wedding industry is dynamic, with each event presenting unique challenges and opportunities. Being adaptable has allowed me to thrive in various situations, from unexpected venue changes to last-minute requests from clients. My advice for those starting out is to embrace flexibility. Stay open to change and be ready to think on your feet; this will serve you well in this ever-evolving field.
Strong Interpersonal Skills: Building rapport with clients is essential, especially in bridal makeup, where trust and comfort are paramount. Having strong interpersonal skills helps create a calming atmosphere and genuine connections with brides. For me, my brides always leave feeling like friends, not just clients. For new artists, I recommend actively listening to your clients and engaging with them authentically. This will not only enhance their experience, but also lead to valuable referrals and lasting relationships.
Commitment to Continuous Learning: The beauty industry is constantly evolving, with new techniques, trends, and products emerging regularly. Staying updated through workshops, online courses, and networking with other professionals has been crucial for my growth. My advice is to never stop learning—seek out educational opportunities, practice new skills, and invest in your craft. This commitment will set you apart and ensure you’re providing the best service possible.
By focusing on these qualities and continuously honing your craft, you can build a successful career in bridal makeup that is both rewarding and fulfilling.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been on the business side of my bridal makeup artistry business. It was important to me to provide a seamless and enjoyable experience for my brides, so I made strategic investments to enhance both communication and booking processes.
One significant change was implementing a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. This has streamlined my communication with clients, allowing for easier scheduling, reminders, and personalized interactions. By automating these processes, I’ve been able to focus more on what truly matters—building relationships and ensuring my brides feel valued and cared for.
Additionally, I’ve invested in various online courses to further refine my skills and expand my knowledge. This commitment to continuous improvement has not only enhanced my artistry I provide, but also enriched the overall experience for my brides.
Overall, these investments have significantly improved my business operations and the quality of service I offer, allowing me to create a more smooth and stress-free experience for my clients.
