We were lucky to catch up with Danielle Daniels recently and have shared our conversation below.
Danielle , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My purpose became evident after being blessed with the opportunity to work at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School, a defining experience that was further solidified when I welcomed my daughter into the world. My interactions with the dedicated staff, eager students, and supportive community surrounding Sanders-Clyde ignited a deep passion within me to serve and uplift others. These experiences have shaped and defined my purpose: to inspire positive change, foster growth, and create meaningful connections that empower individuals and communities to thrive.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As the Community Engagement Director for Reading Partners South Carolina, my role connects our community to the transformative power of literacy. The RPSC Community Engagement Team focuses on community outreach and recruiting, onboarding, and training volunteers, ensuring our programs are equipped with dedicated tutors who support and meet the needs of students and families across the region. What excites me most about this work is witnessing the impact of a child learning to read confidently and it is a privilege to be part of that journey.
What makes Reading Partners special is our commitment to one-on-one tutoring and the meaningful relationships built between students and volunteers. These connections create a ripple effect, inspiring change not only for the child but also for the broader community.
One thing I would love everyone to know is how easy it is to make a difference. Just one hour a week as a volunteer tutor can change a child’s life forever. This year, we’re proud to have launched reading centers in 11 schools. Additionally, we’re hosting a literacy celebration event this spring to honor our incredible volunteers and raise awareness about the importance of early literacy.
As a Charleston native, I am deeply committed to uplifting our local communities. I encourage everyone to get involved—whether by volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word about Reading Partners South Carolina. Together, we can create brighter futures for our children.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey to becoming the Community Engagement Director for Reading Partners South Carolina, three qualities have been particularly impactful: adaptability, relationship-building, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Adaptability: Working in community engagement requires being able to navigate changing circumstances and meet diverse needs. I recommend embracing change as an opportunity to grow. Seek out experiences that challenge you to think creatively and remain flexible under pressure.
Relationship-Building: At the heart of community engagement is connecting with people; volunteers, partners, families, and team members. Strong, authentic relationships are the foundation of impactful work. My advice is to focus on active listening and cultivating empathy. Take the time to understand others’ perspectives and invest in building trust and collaboration.
Commitment to Lifelong Learning: The field of education and community work is ever evolving and as a doctoral student I have learned that education is a lifelong journey. Staying informed about best practices and emerging trends ensures that I can continually improve and serve effectively. Seek mentors, invest in professional development, and be open to feedback which is a powerful way to grow both personally and professionally.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
At Reading Partners South Carolina, we are always looking for volunteers to serve as tutors. Volunteers play a vital role in helping students build the literacy skills they need to succeed. Just one hour a week can make a life-changing difference for a child. Host a Book Drive:
Another impactful way your organization can contribute is by hosting a book drive. The collected books will be given directly to students, many of whom lack access to books at home, helping to nurture a love for reading outside the classroom. We will provide all necessary materials, including collection boxes and flyers. Just send us a PDF of your business or organization’s logo to get started!
Tutor for a Day:
Your business or organization can also support a reading center by providing tutors during a date and time that aligns with your team’s availability.
