Meet Gia Hellwig

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gia Hellwig a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Gia, thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?

In March of 2020, I was laid off like many others. I had always had the dream of starting my own business and being laid off opened the door for the possibility and opportunity to do so. The great part was I knew I couldn’t fail…financially. So many times when people are starting a new business the risk of financial failure can paralyze people, overwhelm people and make it so they never even attempt their dream. I say I couldn’t fail financially because I was receiving unemployment and had built up my savings over the years. Here’s why this is important. I had a financial safety net taking those thoughts of financial failure and always being focused on the money out of the picture. I was able to be creative, be excited and get all up in my ideas and my new business without the added pressure of where my next paycheck was coming from. My layoff was my perfect storm.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I help people, personally and professionally, get shit done. It’s as simple as that. Because I like to do and the big picture doesn’t overwhelm me, helping other people get shit done is my zone of genius. I can’t help but vomit lists and envision projects start to finish. I hear an idea and I literally see (mostly) all of the steps between point A and point B in a split second. It’s like an explosion. It’s the way my brain works. I like to help people move forward. I like to help them get organized and get that thing done that’s been weighing on them or they didn’t know where to begin. I like to help them achieve their outcomes. I like to help them realize that they can be organized, follow a repeatable system and get a handle on something that’s maybe always eluded them. Bottom line – doing brings me joy! I get so excited when I see that lightbulb for someone else because something finally clicked or they completed their project. It’s an awesome feeling. Getting shit done is me at my core. My mission is to give fellow business owners an avenue to focus on getting done what’s most important to them. I offer Get Sh*t Done sessions for all of those reasons.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I got to participate in an amazing women’s group coaching program (shout out to Coach Kelly Mobeck and her LIFT(her) Women’s Group Coaching Program) where I got to dig in and discover what truly makes me tick. There are four qualities that have been the most impactful for me.

Authenticity – knowing myself, staying true to myself and not compromising this to make the next buck.

Tenacity – I am a do whatever it takes type of person and will find solutions.

Self-confidence – I know that I can do it and will do it.

Resourceful – I know what I am capable of and I know what others are capable of; that is powerful knowledge.

My best advice is stop to start realizing the importance of the pause. Do your internal work first, know who you are and what you stand for inside and out, practice that and let that drive you and your business.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My friend and business coach, Kelly Mobeck, has been instrumental in all of these areas. I had never experienced coaching before. I had never run a business before. I felt like I was back in school feverishly taking notes learning everything I could to start and run my business in a way that was authentic to me. Coach Kelly has taught me business tips, business tools AND those are not the most important things I’ve learned. The most valuable work we’ve done centers around BEing. Specifically, who I’m BEing, who I want to BE so that I continue to show up unapologetically as myself. That work has been the foundation that guides me personally and professionally.
