Meet Canon Herring

We were lucky to catch up with Canon Herring recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Canon, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?

When creating a piece of music I rely on my inspirations as well as technical ability. When I come to the end of both of those things I can feel blocked off to creativity. Musicians block is a very common effect, but it doesn’t have to be. Finding the source of your inspirations and limits of your physical ability is crucial to your success. When feeling blocked off to creativity, take the time to step back and assess. Sometimes it is worth pulling back the slingshot to shoot forward into success. Creativity cannot grow from mental fatigue! I have found that when I take the time to rest and get re-inspired, I come back to my project with a better creative flow.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

As a film composer, my job consists of composing and producing the musical arrangements and audio recordings of music for any sort of film. I work on most anything that has video, from commercials to short films or even documentaries and movies. I always love the excitement of a new project and being able to have that outlet for my creativity. Although I am based in Texas, I have worked for companies that stretch around the globe. Never hesitate to reach out because I’m always ready to compose, no matter where my client is!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, there are three important things that helped me get to where I am today. The motivation to assert myself, the discipline of perseverance, and the willingness to take correction.

You cannot get to your dream job without the motivation to assert yourself. It is like trying to ride a horse that doesn’t want to be ridden. A lack of motivation is an opportunity killer and without asserting yourself you will never reach your end goal. Find the motivation to push past the uncomfortable or difficulties and assert yourself.

Although finding motivation is important, without the discipline of perseverance, we cannot finish the race strong. Most people think that perseverance is driven by our motivation, but that should never be the case. Motivation is fleeting when the task gets hard. Perseverance is a discipline of the mind, something to be learned, cultivated and practiced. Practicing discipline in your craft will always set you up for success.

This is why having people beside you to help cultivate your discipline is always wise. Without the willingness to receive correction and accountability, we might grow, but not past our own abilities and strength. Being willing to receive correction is not only beneficial for your own skills as a creative, but for the end results of your project.

There were and are times that I have not acted upon these three things, and suffered the consequences in my business and personal life. But whenever I am mindful of these three things my business thrives and I am set up for success.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

My journey would be meaningless and incomplete without Him who guides my hands and fuels my creativity. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I pray through challenges, and worship through adversities, for He is the source of my inspiration and the strength that I need.
