We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chan Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chan below.
Chan , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As a Black woman working as a stylist in a male-dominated sport, I understand that my journey is distinct and requires me to fight ten times harder to establish my credibility and prove my worth. In this industry, I’ve learned that being underestimated can often be used as a superpower because it forces me to approach every room, every meeting, and every client interaction with unmatched precision, creativity, and excellence. I know I’m good at what I do—not just in terms of putting clothes together, but in understanding the deeper psychology of personal style and how it contributes to branding, confidence, and public perception.
For me, styling is not just about fashion—it’s about storytelling. When I’m working with a client, whether it’s an NFL player preparing for the season, a TV appearance, or a high-profile event, I approach each look with intentionality. I consider their personality, their aspirations, and how they want to be perceived in their career and in their life. I don’t just dress people; I craft images that elevate their presence and make a statement about who they are.
What sets me apart is my deep knowledge and the level of care I bring to my work. As a Black woman, I’ve had to earn respect in spaces that weren’t designed for me, which means I never cut corners. While others might throw together an outfit and hope for the best, I dive into the details—choosing fabrics, silhouettes, and accessories that not only complement my clients but help them stand out in ways they didn’t know were possible. Every piece I select has a purpose, and every look tells a story that commands respect and attention.
I also know that in an industry where women—and particularly Black women—are often overlooked, I must bring more than just style to the table. I bring strategy. I bring the ability to build trust with clients who rely on me not only for their image but for their confidence. I understand how high the stakes are for my clients, and I approach my work with a level of professionalism and insight that sets me apart. My ability to transform their vision into a tangible reality isn’t luck—it’s the result of years of expertise, hard work, and the resilience to keep showing up even when the odds are stacked against me.
Styling in a male-dominated sport isn’t just about the clothes; it’s about being in rooms where I have to advocate for my perspective. And when I’m in those rooms, I rely on my knowledge, my vision, and my relentless commitment to excellence. I use the space to show that I’m not just good—I’m indispensable. The road may not have been easy, but my work speaks for itself, and I carry the strength of knowing that what I bring to the table is unique and invaluable.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a personal stylist with a focus on helping high-profile clients, particularly athletes, refine their image and elevate their personal brand. My work extends beyond simply putting together outfits—I’m in the business of creating confidence, enhancing reputations, and helping my clients present themselves as the best versions of who they are. What makes my career so exciting is that every look I design tells a story about the person wearing it. Whether it’s a red carpet appearance, a high-stakes game, or a branding shoot, I ensure my clients feel confident, powerful, and uniquely themselves.
What’s special about my work is the personal connection I build with each client. I don’t just dress them; I learn their stories, understand their goals, and use fashion as a tool to align their public image with their aspirations. Working with NFL players like Fred Warner, Rasul Douglas, and Marquise Goodwin, as well as entrepreneurs like Stormi Steele of Canvas Beauty, has allowed me to create bold, statement-making looks that resonate both on and off the field. For example, I created a $20,000 look for Fred Warner at the Super Bowl, which was not only a milestone in my career but a reflection of how styling can amplify a client’s presence during major moments.
As a Black woman in a predominantly male industry, I’ve had to work harder to ensure that my voice is heard and my work is valued. But this drive is what fuels me. I’ve built a reputation for delivering exceptional results with attention to detail and an understanding of how style intersects with personal branding. Every client I work with trusts me not just because of my eye for fashion but because of my ability to bring their vision to life with care, professionalism, and precision.
Currently, I’m expanding my brand and exploring new opportunities, including building connections within media and entertainment. I’m also working on designing a personal collection that reflects my philosophy of boldness and individuality. Additionally, I am continuing to focus on styling for major events, like the Super Bowl, and working to build partnerships with other creatives and brands in the fashion industry.
What I’d like people to know about my work is that it’s rooted in passion. I believe that style is transformative—it’s a language, a statement, and a way of life. My mission is to leave a piece of myself with every client I work with, helping them to shine in ways they never imagined. Fashion is more than just clothes; it’s a bridge to confidence, power, and success. That’s the essence of my brand, and I’m excited to continue sharing it with the world.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are dedication, resilience, and determination. These qualities have not only shaped my career but also allowed me to navigate challenges with confidence and purpose.
Dedication
Dedication means putting in the work, even when no one is watching. For me, it’s about consistently striving to improve, staying committed to my clients, and ensuring that I always deliver excellence. Whether it’s spending hours researching trends, tailoring looks to a client’s unique style, or building a network in a competitive industry, dedication is the foundation that ensures success. For those starting their journey, my advice is to stay focused on your craft and put in the time to master your skills. Passion can carry you far, but consistency and discipline will take you even further.
Resilience
Resilience is the ability to keep going despite setbacks, and it’s been a critical skill in my career. As a Black woman in male-dominated spaces, I’ve had to face countless moments of doubt, rejection, and being underestimated. However, resilience has taught me to turn challenges into opportunities and never let obstacles define my journey. My advice to those early in their careers is to embrace failure as a stepping stone to success. You’ll hear “no” more times than you can count, but every “no” is preparing you for the “yes” that will change your life. Build a strong support system, take care of your mental health, and remember that setbacks are temporary, but your vision is not.
Determination
Determination is the driving force that keeps you moving forward, even when the odds feel insurmountable. For me, determination means believing in myself, my vision, and my ability to create something meaningful, no matter how many doors I have to knock on. It’s about staying true to my goals and finding ways to make things happen, whether it’s building relationships, landing a new client, or elevating my brand. For anyone starting out, my advice is to stay hungry and never lose sight of your end goal. Develop a clear vision of what you want to achieve, and let that vision guide your decisions. When challenges arise, lean into your determination to find solutions and keep pushing forward.
Final Advice
To develop these qualities, surround yourself with people who inspire you, invest in learning opportunities, and don’t shy away from hard work. Practice self-reflection regularly to understand your strengths and areas for growth. And most importantly, believe in yourself. The journey isn’t always easy, but with dedication, resilience, and determination, you can overcome obstacles and create something truly remarkable.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who believes in me wholeheartedly, trusting my vision and expertise because they’ve seen the magic I create through my work. They understand that I’m not just styling outfits—I’m crafting a narrative that represents who they are and where they’re headed. This client values collaboration, respects my creative process, and embraces the journey we’re embarking on together. They trust me without hesitation, giving me the freedom to design bold, impactful looks that not only elevate their personal brand but also leave an impression wherever they go.
But more than just trust, my ideal client is someone who sees our relationship as a partnership. They allow me to walk with them as they grow in their career, giving me the opportunity to evolve their style alongside their success. Together, we build a journey—one where fashion becomes a reflection of their growth, confidence, and ambition. This client understands that our work doesn’t stop at a single event or a single season; it’s a continuous collaboration that adapts and flourishes as they reach new heights.
What excites me most is the chance to create not just looks, but a legacy. With an ideal client, I can pour my passion into every detail, knowing they trust me to help them shine. Our partnership becomes a testament to the power of style, creativity, and shared vision—a connection that fuels both of our successes and allows us to leave our mark on the world.
