We recently connected with Carole Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carole, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
Being an immigrant myself, and being born into an immigrant family, a lot of our values and principles carried over to my way of life in the States. As a child I watched my parents work 2+ jobs at times to make sure they were able to provide what our family needed. With this example, I made it my mission to work so hard that I never have to worry about not having. Not only this, but I wanted to make sure I could provide the same example for my future family.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a hair stylist of 8+ years, as well as a business owner of 3 years. I started off doing hair in my bedroom at around 14/15 years old, then proceeded to transition into being a stylist to provide my quality services in the comfort of my clients’ homes. This year I have been diving deeper into community work through sponsoring and coordinating my first networking event this past June. This open up many doors for me in the event planning industry as well as motivational speaking and networking.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would definitely say that my tenacity, resilience, and faith In God and myself have brought me to where I am today. One thing that I’ve noticed is hard for many budding entrepreneurs, is maintaining growth and consistency. Being that growth requires consistency, it’s always important to keep in mind that obstacles are bound to come in any journey through life. But what will continue to drive you is your passion for self-growth. Wanting to be a better version tomorrow than you were yesterday, because at the end of the day our future is in our hands with God’s guidance if we so chose to listen.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I’ve always felt there is some truth in the popular quote, “a jack of all trades is a master of none.” Being a neurodivergent person myself, I’ve always battled against my urge to conquer every interest I’ve had as opposed to taking my time to master each one. But I have also found it is in a way my superpower. My ability to focus on multiple areas of my life helps me to focus on the broader picture instead of making my little problems in the grand scheme seem like giants. When we focus on where we fail more than where we can improve we can often time become our own biggest road blocks. But learning to do your best in every area that you can and take breaks when needed, often helps me learn skills that can help the places I am “weaker” at and thus improve my overall growth.
