We were lucky to catch up with Aben Eubanks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aben, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I have times where I’m feeling a little overwhelmed and worried for sure. But I’ve also been around long enough to know and have witnessed first hand that everything always works “out”. It doesn’t always look the way you wanted or hoped it would turn out, but it always shifts to a new phase that needs a new or updated solution. I try to remember that if I do my best with my time and energy, good things are more likely to happen, rather than spending my time worrying about things that I cannot control. Optimism is a choice. Like anything, look at your choices and go with the best one.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have worked with Kelly Clarkson for 20 years as a co-writer and musician in her band, touring the world and performing for everyone from Popes to Presidents, SNL to GMA, American Idol to The Voice. We just rereleased Kelly’s second Christmas album “When Christmas Comes Around…Again”. I voice the Kelly Clarkson Connection channel on SiriusXM Channel 12 as well.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
By far the most important of all of these is value. Finding a way to bring value to any and every situation or person you can. Everyone is looking for value, anything that will improve someone’s position or situation. Bring value often and often you’ll be valued.
Next is communication, the ability to express yourself and your needs. No one is a mind reader and no one likes to be tried as one. Politely say what you mean or want, don’t waste people’s time.
Last, and this one is easy. Just be a kind person. Don’t bring your grievances with you. If something has you ticked off, don’t make it other people’s issue to deal with.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents were very supportive. My mom didn’t love that I was venturing off into a pretty uncertain industry but was still supportive because she knew what it meant to me. Support is sometimes more important than good advice.
