We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sami Schmidt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sami below.
Sami, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
silience as a queer business owner comes from navigating the intersection of my identity and my entrepreneurial journey. Building a business that supports local women-owned farms and creates opportunities for LGBTQ+ individuals is a reflection of my belief that challenges can lead to meaningful change. Every step I take, from building community connections to advocating for inclusivity, strengthens my determination to thrive and make an impact.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Sami and I am the owner and operator of Mobile Mini’s Bloom Bar, a mobile flower truck business operating out of a lovingly restored 1969 Dodge A100 Adventurer, nicknamed ‘Daisy.’ My business is rooted in a deep love for locally sourced flowers and a commitment to supporting Wisconsin-based, women-owned farms. What makes Mobile Mini’s Bloom Bar truly special is that it’s not just a flower truck—it’s a celebration of creativity, community, and inclusivity.
As a queer and women-owned business, I’m passionate about creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and represented. My work isn’t just about flowers; it’s about fostering connections, supporting local businesses, and giving back to the community. In the near future, I’m excited to expand the fleet with additional vehicles, each with its own unique personality and purpose.
I’m also exploring new ventures, including pop-up events and collaborations with local artists and businesses. Beyond that, I’m planning to introduce workshops to bring people together for hands-on floral design experiences, allowing them to tap into their creativity while supporting a local business.
Mobile Mini’s Bloom Bar is more than a brand; it’s a platform for joy, connection, and growth. I hope to inspire others with my story and pave the way for more LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs to thrive.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three key qualities have been most impactful in my journey:
1. Authenticity: Staying true to who I am and what I value has been a cornerstone of my success. Running a queer and women-owned business rooted in community and inclusivity wouldn’t have been possible without embracing my identity and using it as a source of strength.
Advice: Lean into your unique perspective—it’s what sets you apart. Build your brand or business around your values, and don’t be afraid to let your authentic self shine.
2. Adaptability: Starting and running a business comes with unexpected challenges, from navigating market shifts to managing logistics. Being able to pivot and think creatively has helped me overcome obstacles and grow.
Advice: Learn to see challenges as opportunities for growth. Stay curious, open to feedback, and willing to learn new skills to navigate change with confidence.
3. Community-Building: Connecting with others—whether it’s local flower farmers, collaborators, or customers—has been essential. These relationships make the work fulfilling and create a foundation of trust and support.
Advice: Invest time in building genuine connections. Attend local events, collaborate with others in your field, and listen to your community’s needs. Success is rarely a solo endeavor.
For those just starting out, I’d say: focus on what makes you unique, stay flexible in your approach, and surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. Growth takes time, but staying true to your purpose will guide you through the ups and downs.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the past 12 months, one of the most impactful areas of growth for me has been learning the value of collaboration and community. I’ve partnered with so many amazing small businesses that have not only supported me but also shaped the success of Mobile Mini’s Bloom Bar. This journey has solidified the idea that you cannot reach your goals alone—because together truly is better.
One partnership that stands out is with my best friend, who runs her own small coffee and treat bar out of a Shasta trailer and started a shared commercial kitchen space. Her perseverance and determination have been a constant source of inspiration, reminding me what’s possible when you combine hard work with passion. Watching her overcome challenges and thrive has guided me as I navigate my own path, reinforcing the importance of surrounding yourself with people who uplift and motivate you.
This year, I’ve learned that collaboration isn’t just about business—it’s about building relationships that align with your values. These partnerships have not only helped me grow professionally but also deepened my appreciation for the power of working together toward shared success.
