Hi Donterell , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

Confidence and self-esteem, for me, have been built through experience and reflection. It’s a mix of preparation, self-awareness, and faith. I’ve faced situations where I had to rise to the occasion, and over time, I realized I’m capable of handling challenges. My faith plays a big role—it gives me a foundation, reminding me that I’m created with purpose and equipped with what I need to succeed.

I’ve also learned that confidence isn’t about being the loudest or the most certain; it’s about trusting my instincts and preparation. When I walk into a room, I focus on what I bring to the table, not on what I might lack. I’ve stopped seeking validation from others—if I’m doing my best and staying authentic, that’s enough.

Lastly, it’s about practice. Every time I take a risk, learn a new skill, or accomplish something, it’s a reminder that I’m growing. Confidence is like a muscle—the more I use it, the stronger it gets. And honestly, I remind myself not to take life too seriously. Confidence thrives when I let go of fear and just embrace who I am.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m a creative and strategist at heart. While my main work is as a producer, what I do goes far beyond making music. I focus on building bridges—connecting artists with their audience in authentic, meaningful ways. Whether it’s crafting a sound, shaping a brand, or strategizing the next big move, I thrive on the process of bringing a vision to life.

What excites me most about my work is the storytelling. Every artist has a unique narrative, and I love helping them tell that story in a way that resonates deeply with their audience. It’s like solving a puzzle where creativity, strategy, and emotion come together seamlessly. And when it all clicks, there’s nothing more rewarding.

Recently, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to help launch Mega Records, the brainchild of LA Reid and Usher. Being part of something so monumental has been an honor. It’s a space where innovation and artistry take center stage, and playing a role in building its foundation has pushed me to new heights creatively and professionally.

At the same time, my focus is on elevating Stoney, an artist whose voice and vision are truly unmatched. Her debut single, Better Off, is making waves, and we’re building momentum toward something much bigger. We’re currently planning a 2024 tour to bring her music to new audiences and expand her reach. It’s an exciting journey, and I’m grateful to be part of shaping her story.

Beyond my work with individual artists and labels, my personal brand is rooted in authenticity and longevity. I don’t believe in shortcuts or trends—I believe in creating work that lasts and leaves a legacy. Whether it’s music, business, or storytelling, my ultimate goal is to make an impact that matters.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, I’d say three qualities have been most impactful in my journey: adaptability, strategic thinking, and emotional intelligence. Each of these has shaped not only my approach to work but also how I navigate relationships and opportunities.

Adaptability has been key because no journey is a straight line. There are twists, turns, and unexpected challenges, and being able to pivot without losing sight of the bigger picture is what keeps you moving forward. Whether it’s learning a new skill, adjusting to industry shifts, or finding creative solutions, adaptability is what turns obstacles into stepping stones.

Strategic thinking has allowed me to see the bigger picture and make calculated moves. It’s about understanding that every step you take—big or small—should serve a purpose. Early on, I learned to not only focus on the “what” but also the “why” and “how.” That mindset has helped me make decisions that align with my long-term goals and build something sustainable.

Emotional intelligence might be the most underrated quality, but it’s been crucial in every area of my work. Whether I’m collaborating with an artist, negotiating a deal, or leading a project, understanding people—their needs, motivations, and emotions—makes all the difference. It’s what builds trust and fosters meaningful connections.

For those just starting out, my advice is simple:

Embrace challenges. See them as opportunities to grow your adaptability. The more you push yourself outside your comfort zone, the more prepared you’ll be for anything.

Think long-term. Learn to strategize not just for today, but for where you want to be in 5, 10, or even 20 years. This means being intentional with your time, your resources, and your energy.

Invest in people skills. The ability to listen, empathize, and communicate effectively is priceless. It’ll take you further than talent alone ever could.

Lastly, remember that growth is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself, and celebrate every step forward, no matter how small.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

The number one challenge I’m currently facing is navigating a significant transition in my career. It’s a moment of redefining my path and ensuring that the foundation I’ve built continues to support my long-term vision. Transitions like these are never without their complexities, but I see them as opportunities for growth and alignment.

To address this, I’m focusing on strategic planning and bringing in the right expertise to guide me through the process. I’m taking a proactive approach to ensure that every decision I make reflects my values and goals. At the same time, I’m staying future-focused, building relationships and setting the stage for the next chapter of my journey.

What’s most important to me is moving forward with integrity and a clear vision. While transitions can be challenging, they also allow for reflection and refinement. I’m confident that the steps I’m taking now will lead to even greater opportunities down the line.
