Meet Korbin Brown

We recently connected with Korbin Brown and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Korbin, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

How did I develop my ability to take risk? I think I’ve always been a risky person. I think it comes with the territory as creative. I understand taking risks can be a scary thing for many. It can be risk alone that stops people from ever trying. My relationship with risk and how I developed the ability to take risk came when I created my first short film. In that process I had to learn an undeniable truth. I had to learn that no risk I take is greater than the sum of myself. No matter how large the risk seems, it can’t destroy me. I won’t let it. Call it the skill of resilience over risk taking but I think they’re two sides of the same coin. How many times can you bet on yourself, your ideas, and your beliefs before you tap out? Once I learned taking risks became second hand.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My name is Korbin Brown aka WonderKorbo. I’m Director in Los Angeles as well as a USC graduate student. I’m currently creating a plethora of short films across several genre’s, but my goal as a Director is create afro-surrealist themed film and television. In the upcoming year I can’t wait to premier my short film at festivals and more. Be on the lookout, 2025.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three skills that were most impactful for me were patience, discernment, and collaboration. The patience is a virtue and I can’t say I’ve fully mastered it, but I can say I’ve learned enough to understand, not everything will happen in the time frame that you want it to so relax and focus on the process. Discernment is a great skill I picked up. Gaining better judgment will save you so much time. Collaboration is an another skill that I think has taken me farther in my journey than I would have expected. Collaboration is key in making great art and the better I became the faster I was able to produces projects and the better those projects became. My advice to all young creatives would be to pick up at least 2 out of the 3 of these for a better process in growing as a creative.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Feeling overwhelmed is a feeling I know all too well. A reset button is something that I recommend every person have. A reset button is a small task or a local place you can do or reach to help slow life down. For me it’s watching a film (preferably in a movie theatre). I’ve been using a reset button since I was 19. I can say when I’ve felt the most overwhelmed, or like life is crashing down, using my reset button has been my best asset.
