We recently connected with Harley Melancon and have shared our conversation below.
Harley, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My business began when I was between moving to a new city, and a new career after the heartbreak of a soon to be young divorce. Coming from a very small town in Louisiana, I was aware without making changes there was no real way to heal. With a little self- compassion, and desire to grow, my now business was born as a therapeutic hiatus to my new life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Holidays with Harley is a holiday design company that has flourished into so much more. During
“the season” the elves and I travel to peoples homes in Louisiana, Texas, and Colorado to bring holiday decor to life. This business is so special because it allows us into our client’s homes during the time of the year when they are creating magical family memories. We have become part of so many photos with Santa, Christmas dinners, trick or treating backdrops, and Mardi Gras royalty celebrations.
Our 7 day a week season starts the week after labor day and typically ends the day after Mardi Gras, but let’s not forget every day is a holiday in Louisiana. We continue into festival season, as well as designing and coordinating small events such as baby showers, kid parties, engagements, rehearsal, and so much more.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Creativity and Imagination
2. Resilience
3. Decisiveness
My best advice would be to throw out the rear view mirrors, and create a BOLD and COLORFUL life. Be decisive even if its the wrong decision figure out how to learn, grow, and improve on every mistake.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The two most impactful thing my parents did for me was expose the world to me through travel, and challenge me every day to be the best I could be at whatever I choose to do. There were never any closed doors in our world, we learned about new cultures, tasted new dishes, went on new adventures, and saw new parts of the world. This opened my eyes to so much inspiration and creativity, but also with their love and support I was able to create a career out of the passion of holiday design. They both help me in my day to day decor business, and its fun to see how much we all compliment each other.
