Meet Michael Flowers (aka Masud Asante / Mikeflo)

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Flowers (aka Masud Asante / Mikeflo). We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Michael , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience, in part, comes from being a 23yr cancer survivor (Sarcoma). The diagnoses itself allowed me to focus on the quality of my life and how to fill myself up. That makes me ultra resilient and fortified tested for various things out here in this world, because many of these things aren’t as “real” to me to begin with.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Simply put, I’m an artist. I’m a maker and creator. I’m a recording artist (my latest album “Indigenous Genius” is streaming everywhere now, as well as my other 13 studio albums). I’m a former “DJ” (I’m not a disc jockey) and current Sound Shaman/Musicologist. I curate and play all over the world. Currently, I play a party called “Love Language” in Miami, Florida, I play other events as well and I’m also a tour musical director for the legendary hip hop duo ‘dead prez’ for the last 18yrs. I’m a visual artist. I’m an abstract expressionist using paint as my main vehicle. I also play around with some graphic arts. I’ve been an artist my entire adult life and enjoy creating and sharing my spontaneity.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The 3 undeniable qualities I believe you want/need to possess are presence, awareness, and patience. The past already happened, the future is now and the best tasting foods often aren’t instant. The best meals take time to prepare. Be present and enjoy the journey. Patience doesn’t mean waiting. It means acknowledging that time is a great asset and needed beyond what you think you may want/need in various moments of your life.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My mom really impacted my life by showing me what self determination really looked and felt like growing up. She also kept our home full of music daily and that served as a great foundation and source of inspiration for my life in music.
