We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Terran Eaton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Terran below.
Terran , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I moved to New York with a job and an Airbnb hoping to be able to take my acting to the next level. I lost the job and every day had to hunt for a new job. I would go to broadway time square daily to remind myself why I was there. Eventually I moved back to NC and had an NYC work ethic because I struggled so bad. But I learned that fire refines and a loss is a lesson. The burns build a fire in me that touchy resilience.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Wassup y’all I’m Terran Eaton and go by Teejay, I act and am a multi-hyphenate artist, that includes dancing, djing, and filmmaking. Shoutout to the phenomenal directors I’ve worked with like Melissa Rattray, Albert Greene, Crishna Murray, Tye Banks. I have been acting since I was 13 in middle school. I am inspired by my father who passed away who made me think critically and pushed me to go after something practical, push past excuses, and take acting serious. My mothers words of encouragement and nurturing affirmed my doubts and insecurities. I have been acting ever since.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I was in New York while job searching I had and have movies on Tubi, YouTube, and prime but I knew it meant nothing without marketing. Marketing stems from believing in myself. Every interview it was about selling my self and every interaction was about making sure people knew I was an actor, or that I dabbled acting. Every time I stepped out of the house the show must go on. It was about stacking or starving for survival. This meant trying very hard and removing fear. Fear is fake only meant to slow down brilliant notions and ideas.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I moved back to North Carolina broken and overwhelmed by the loss and struggle I suffered. I went to my Barber Linwood McCoy and told me I needed to take all that I went through give it to God and let God restore. He then gave me a cut and two days later I was given a one liner role. It was small but it was a restart. Take even the small roles and star in them. Never despise the day of small beginnings. I shot something in Atlanta with Director Muhaymin Luckett called “ Unresolved Feelings”. I had three hours of sleep a nine hour grey hound ride and work right after and even fatigued I had to deliver. I didn’t want to let my bro down. I unfortunately learned as I forgot all my lines and made a mockery of the production my bro paid me for the role. Not because what I had done but what he believed I could do and sowed into my potential. We reshot it and I learned that being overwhelmed is normal but cannot be an end place, keep going.
