We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Je’von Hugley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Je’von with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I honestly think that I get my work ethic from my mom. she’s a single mother who raised two big boys by herself… Trust me that wasn’t an easy job & with her being a single mother she was always working trying to provide for me and my little brother. My mom is the best cook and she really used that to her advantage. She would sometimes put together a menu and sell plates and she would also bake too! So I guess me watching her get to it made me want to have that same energy when it came to work
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Well for Those who don’t already know.. My name is Je’von! I’m 21 years old, Born in Fort Lauderdale & I am a Fashion Model! I’ve been modeling a little over a year now and words can’t express how blessed I am to be able to do my dream job! when I was 14 I was really trying to figure out who I was and the things I liked to do & what I potentially would want to do career wise in life. During that journey I noticed that I really enjoyed fashion i enjoyed the glamour of going shopping, buying new clothes, playing dress up, and even just being a second eye! I also live for taking pictures & around that time I had just started getting on social media. I also have to say although I was still a young teen.. my family was very protective over me & to hear me saying that modeling is what I wanted to do out of life was very new for them cause their generation was told that if you want make it in this world you have to go to school and get your education/degree so you can be something great! I knew that wasn’t the life for me. so I made a promise to myself that when I turned 18 that I would then start my modeling career and here we are now! So far in the last year i’ve done 3 runway shows, 3 photoshoots, and have a feature in harper’s bazaar! the best part of my job is obviously wearing the nicest garments & seeing the end results seeing how everything came together in its own special way.. there’s no better feeling! I have a few portfolio shoots being planned right now and I hope everyone is just as excited to see what I have in store for you guys! Stay tuned!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Getting professional Guidance is a huge one for me. Starting out I didn’t know what step to take to get started with modeling cause it’s not something that was easily accessible here in Oklahoma where I currently live. I went to my very first show in california not having a single clue on what i was truly getting myself into. So understanding the world you’re about to embark upon is very important. Going into my career I started out with doing a test shoot to see if this was something i actually wanted to do and if it was something that I would enjoy doing! I learned very quick that it’s not as easy as the supermodels make it look haha! That didn’t change my mind on modeling though but I quickly learned and realized that in this industry you are creating art and you are bringing garments to life! so that leads me to my last, being CONFIDENT! I forget who I heard this from but my favorite saying is “you wear the clothes, don’t let the clothes wear you!” this is something that has stuck with me for years and it’s actually helped me in a lot of ways when it comes to dressing up for something because I feel confident in the garments i’m wearing. so when you’re in that photoshoot and you aren’t sure on what to do remember that you are the one brining these garments alive you are the one making the story and creating art!
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
So I live in Oklahoma… yikes I know right! there isn’t a lot going on here fashion wise so it’s kind’ve hard to find jobs and get bookings. I’m currently back and forth from here and florida where i’m originally from so i’ve been looking for agencies and management groups to potentially sign to that way I can start booking more jobs and doing more shows and to also have a reason to keep flying home!
