We recently connected with Selina Nguyen and have shared our conversation below.
Selina, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
I believe my generosity comes from a desire to uplift others and bring happiness and spread kindness especially to those who may be going through difficult times. I’ve personally experienced times when I was struggling or needed help, and generous people went out of their way to support me, even when I initially resisted. Those experiences taught me a lot about kindness and karma. I truly believe that when you do good for others, good things come back to you. When we uplift others, we create a reaction that can lead to a more compassionate world. Generosity is not just about giving money or things; it’s about showing empathy, listening, and being there for people when they need it. I find joy in knowing that my actions, however small, can make someone’s day brighter or their situation a little easier.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have always loved event planning — from hosting parties to organizing bridal showers, I’ve been drawn to the details and energy that go into creating memorable experiences. With eight years in the events and entertainment industry, I’ve gained the knowledge and determination to start my own business. That’s how Laluna Photo Booths came to life, offering photo booth rental services for all types of events. I’m passionate about this industry because I was fortunate to have mentors guide me along the way, inspiring me to pay that generosity forward in my own work. What excites me most about running Laluna is being part of my clients’ most cherished moments, from weddings and graduations to anniversaries and other special celebrations. Capturing these memories through photos and knowing I’ve played a role in making these events unforgettable is incredibly rewarding. I rebranded to Laluna Photo Booths earlier this year, and while I’m committed to growing my business, I’m also balancing a full-time role as a property manager and continuing my education at university. My goal is to reinvest in Laluna as I establish it, with the hope of one day taking it full-time. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me and to continue creating lasting memories for my clients.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I believe three main qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge have made the biggest impact on my journey. First, communication has been invaluable, especially since I’ve had the opportunity to work across different industries and connect with a variety of people. Learning to engage and relate to others has allowed me to make strong first impressions and build relationships, which are essential in any business. Effective communication has not only helped me understand clients’ needs but also made people feel comfortable with my personality and services. For those starting out, developing interpersonal skills by interacting with a wide range of people can be incredibly beneficial. When clients feel connected to you, they’re more likely to trust and engage with your brand. Another impactful area has been the importance of doing something you love and truly understanding it. My passion for the events industry led me to dig deep, research the field, and find unique ways to market my photo booth business. When you’re genuinely interested in your work, it shows, and that pride in your service resonates with clients. For anyone early in their journey, I’d suggest taking the time to learn as much as possible about your chosen field. Knowing the latest trends and identifying what makes your offering unique will make you more confident and help you connect authentically with others. Lastly, initiative and time management have played a crucial role in my ability to grow my business while balancing other responsibilities. Taking action, avoiding procrastination, and staying dedicated to my goals have helped me make consistent progress. Balancing a full workload requires clear priorities and accountability, which has helped me keep my focus even when things get busy. My advice for others would be to set clear goals and use strategies to stay on track, like creating schedules and setting personal deadlines. This proactive approach will help anyone stay motivated and committed to their goals, and ultimately, that commitment is what drives success.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Over the past 12 months, the biggest area of growth for me has been in networking and marketing. Marketing is essential to any business, and I’ve found that building strong connections with other businesses and clients has been crucial for growth. By attending events like Canada’s Bridal Show and the National Women’s Show, I’ve not only expanded my network but also connected with other small businesses that share similar goals. These events have opened up new opportunities for collaboration and helped me increase brand visibility, which has been invaluable in building Laluna Photo Booths. Through these experiences, I’ve gained a stronger understanding of how networking and effective marketing can work together to elevate a business.
