Meet Emma Adler

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emma Adler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Emma, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?

My self discipline comes from having to be realistic with the outside world. I understand that it’s an individual’s responsibility to create their desired circumstances, and it’s something that now motivates me where it used to feel like a heavy rock weighing me down.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m Emma Adler, but most people know me as AMI.
I work in the Fine Art World. I’ve managed two Atlanta-based contemporary art galleries, Gallery Anderson Smith and LOMA Galleries. I am finishing my Master’s in Fine Arts at The Savannah College of Art and Design and will have my thesis solo show at Echo Contemporary Art Gallery in May 2025. You can learn more about my artwork on my website, emmaadler.com, and see me moving around the art world on my YouTube channel, @AMIADLER.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I’ve been an artist since I was a kid; it came naturally to me, and it was simply the way my brain was wired. My late great-grandfather was a man named Calvin J. Goodman, who created the art marketing handbook for the 21st century. He built me in his image and for his legacy. I know what I know because of him and the opportunity to be in fine arts academia for over seven years.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

Right now, I’m finishing my Master of Fine Arts and managing the careers of multiple emerging artists. I seem to forget that I’m also an artist, and sometimes, I neglect my practice for the sake of my career. I love what I do and believe in the art world more than anything, but it’s been a continuous challenge to remember to water myself when I’m watering my community.
