We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mandre Zachary a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mandre , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Growing up, I learned the true meaning of work ethic from the people who shaped my world. My grandmother, a woman of unmatched strength, taught me so much through her actions rather than words. Raised in a time when women weren’t often seen in fields like welding, she defied expectations. A pipe fitter welder by trade, she was a force to be reckoned with. Watching her juggle raising three daughters while working long, grueling hours in a physically demanding job left an indelible mark on me. The dedication she showed was more than just a job; it was a lifestyle. I learned early on that no matter the task, you give it everything you’ve got—because hard work isn’t just about the outcome, it’s about what you put into it.
My parents, and Aunts both military veterans, added another layer to this foundation. Discipline, precision, and sacrifice were constants in our household. The structure they provided was unwavering, but so was their support. They showed me that being consistent, punctual, and committed wasn’t just a routine—it was a mindset. Their service reinforced the importance of doing your duty, not just when it’s convenient, but especially when it’s tough.
Then there was my grandfather. His words still echo in my mind: “You work hard, you’ll see the rewards.” He lived by those words, and I watched him reap the fruits of his labor, not just in material wealth, but in the respect he earned from everyone around him. He believed in the value of a job well done, and that philosophy has guided me through everything I do.
From my grandmother’s grit, my parents’ discipline, and my grandfather’s wisdom, I absorbed lessons that shaped my work ethic. They taught me that hard work isn’t just about pushing through—it’s about the integrity you bring to your craft, the pride you take in your effort, and the responsibility to leave things better than you found them. Every day, I carry their lessons with me, striving to do the same for those who come after me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the Owner and President of Sips ‘N Tips Bartending & Event Staffing Services LLC, where we specialize in bringing your event visions to life. Whether it’s a wedding, a corporate gathering, or an intimate celebration, my team and I are dedicated to ensuring that everything goes smoothly, and everyone leaves with a smile.
As the head of Sips ‘N Tips, I wear many hats—I’m not just the owner, but I step into roles like bartender, event manager, and even wedding officiant. There’s something truly special about being able to serve people and see the joy on their faces when we create unforgettable experiences for them. I love the challenge of making every event unique, helping our clients’ ideas come together, and watching their vision become a reality. It’s a deeply rewarding feeling.
I also serve as the Vice President of Black Business Professionals of Southeast Texas (SETX), a non-profit organization that is committed to recognizing, connecting, and growing underutilized businesses and professionals in our area. Through this role, I’m passionate about uplifting our community and helping local businesses thrive. We focus on connecting individuals who have the potential to be role models for the younger generation, and anyone seeking inspiration. We believe in collaboration, empowerment, and working together to create a brighter future for Southeast Texas.
In addition to my event services, I also offer event consulting. I help brides, wedding planners, decorators, and caterers ensure that all the details of an event tie together beautifully. From food and beverage management to making sure the overall flow is perfect, I love being that trusted advisor who can make a bride’s dream wedding come true or help a corporate event stand out.
What brings me the most pride in what I do is seeing all the hard work come together in a moment of joy, whether it’s at a wedding or any event where everyone is having a great time. The satisfaction of knowing that I helped make someone’s special day perfect is what keeps me motivated. Every event is an opportunity for me to bring my expertise and passion to the table, and that’s what fuels me.
If there’s one thing I want you to know, it’s this: everything I do—from the bartending, event management, to community work—is driven by a genuine desire to help people and make a difference. There’s no greater reward than knowing I’ve made an impact, whether in the lives of those I serve at an event or in the work I do for the business community in Southeast Texas.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities or skills on my journey have been adaptability, networking, and a deep commitment to service. These have truly shaped my entrepreneurial path and my work as a community philanthropist.
Adaptability is crucial, especially in the event services industry. Events are dynamic and often unpredictable, and being able to think on my feet and adjust quickly has helped me handle challenges effectively. I’ve learned that no two events are ever the same, so being open to change and learning as you go is vital. For those early in their journey, my advice is to embrace flexibility. Don’t get discouraged by setbacks or unexpected changes; instead, see them as opportunities to learn and improve.
Networking has been another game-changer. Building meaningful relationships with people in both my business and philanthropic roles has opened doors I never even knew existed. Whether it’s other event professionals, potential clients, or community leaders, I’ve learned that your network can be a powerful asset. For those just starting out, don’t underestimate the power of personal connections. Go out, meet people, and invest in relationships that will support you, challenge you, and help you grow. Attend events, join groups, and get involved in your community—those connections will help you build a solid foundation.
Lastly, a deep commitment to service has been a key factor in my success. Whether it’s providing exceptional service at an event or working with the Black Business Professionals of SETX, my focus has always been on serving others—making their experience better and helping them achieve their goals. This mindset has made me passionate about what I do and has earned the trust and loyalty of my clients and partners. For those starting out, develop a service mindset early. Focus on how you can make a positive impact on others, and the rest will follow. When you lead with integrity and dedication to service, you’ll build a reputation that will last.
In summary, be adaptable, build strong networks, and always put service at the heart of everything you do. These qualities are essential for anyone starting their entrepreneurial journey.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Throughout my journey, there have been several key individuals who have played pivotal roles in helping me overcome challenges and develop the essential skills needed for success. First and foremost, my wife, Executive Chef Cathy Zachary, has been an incredible support system—both mentally and emotionally. Not only has she supported all my entrepreneurial endeavors and non-profit community outreach efforts, but she has also provided me with the training and guidance that propelled me toward management and helped shape my career path. Her belief in me has been invaluable, and her support continues to be a driving force in my personal and professional growth.
In addition to Cathy, I must acknowledge the profound impact of my church family. Bishop L.O. Ardoin and Pastor Ella Ardoin have been instrumental in my life. Their mentorship and guidance through my faith journey have been a source of strength, especially during some of my most difficult times. Through their continuous prayers, encouragement, and wise counsel, they’ve helped me remain focused and grounded, reminding me of the power of perseverance and faith. I’m incredibly grateful to have such a supportive network of people who have helped me grow both spiritually and professionally.
