Meet Genesis Morris

We recently connected with Genesis Morris and have shared our conversation below.

Genesis, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Finding my confidence has been a long journey. Starting my content journey a little over a year ago has helped my confidence tremendously. I believe it was last October I was working in retail and I was obsessed with TikTok, trying to figure out how to gain followers and go viral. My coworker Stefani and I decided to post every single day for a month no matter what. I’m a perfectionist so this really forced me to stop overthinking, put it out and see whatever happens. Some videos were fun, others were crazy but we stuck to it. Unfortunately we didn’t gain a big following or go viral but this challenge really freed me from talking myself out of doing something or saying I’m not good enough etc. Shortly after that I started brainstorming about my coffee show “G’s Brew & Banter” and when I tell you most filming days were full of hiccups. A few times my mic stopped working, other times the NYC noise was distracting, bad lighting, just craziness! Small thoughts would enter my mind about how this episode will be bad or how no one’s gonna watch it. Surprisingly all the episodes I experienced challenges that tested my creative gangsta did very well and my supports were in the comments with sweet, funny, and motivational messages. Once this continued to happen I just accepted that whatever I put my mind to do I’m gonna make it happen. It might not be perfect or exactly what I envisioned but it’s still something I’m proud of. Today I’m in a place where these creative bumps in the road boost my confidence just enough to get through it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a woman of many talents. I’m a dancer and actress. These are 2 loves that I’m actively pursuing but right now creating content has my heart. I’m enjoying connecting with the guests I have on my show, knitting coffee cozies to gift them and editing. Editing is my most favorite thing to do, I get lost in it. When I’m locked in, the ideas that come to mind are endless. I’m currently editing a docuseries I’ve been working on with the Brooklynettes. Getting to know these woman on a personal level, and being able to catch vulnerable beautiful moments has been a highlight. There are times when I’m overwhelmed because I’ve never done something like this before but like I said before these challenges just boost my confidence and make me go even harder.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three skills that impacted my journey the most were discipline, my people skills, and my being delusional in some ways. Growing up I never felt like there was something I couldn’t do. I woke up one day and said I’m gonna be an actress and dancer not even knowing how hard this career path would be. When I got injured at 14yrs old I started to doubt myself and question what was my plan B. Luckily I was already far enough in following my dreams that I had and still have amazing people in my corner reminding me that I’m talented and I got it. The advice I want to give folks who are early in their career is don’t wait for everything to be perfect to start. Whatever you have to begin is good enough and you can always improve as you go. There’s never gonna be a right time.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

My biggest area of growth in the past 12months has definitely been my consistency with posting on social media. I’ve been on top of making sure I post cute pictures, showing off cool places I’ve traveled to, and most importantly my weekly episodes of “G’s Brew & Banter”. No matter how crazy my schedule is outside of being a content creator I always make sure that a new episode is going out every Tuesday.
