Meet Thatgirlkay

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Thatgirlkay. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with ThatGirlKay below.

Hi ThatGirlKay, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

As a hairstylist, I get my resilience from striving to become better every day. There’s always something you can take from what you learned yesterday and implement that into the next opportunity you have to strive for better. I remember at times there would be parts of learning about hair and understanding that there is a process within that too. As long as you see the takeaway each time, later done the line, you’ll see how important each stage of the process is. This is why it’s so important to be engaged within your work at all times because there is always room for growth and improvement in any area of your performed craft.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

More about my avatar ThatGirlKay, I enjoy the experience of creating beauty as self-care for the body & mind. Mentality feeling relaxed and at ease with a beautiful physical appearance as a result, is the best part of my work that I love. I create a space and environment where women feel comfortable being themselves, vulnerable, and loved. I am so excited to take on offering natural hair services for my clients this upcoming year, as taking care of hair underneath your extensions is just as important as taking care of the extensions themselves.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Number one, learning about customer service is so key. You set the tone of a calming and communicative appointment, nine times out of ten, it will be that. If you approach your customers with this appearance and energy every time, they will love the consistent service they willingly know they will receive coming to you. Number two, doing my craft on myself has had a tremendous impact as well. Not only are you a walking advertisement, but this is the best time to learn things you never knew about versus giving your service to your client. For hours I’d sit in the mirror just having fun while doing my hair, learning every step of the way I could. Lastly. Number 3, the environment you give your service is just as important as the energy you approach every client with. Your client wants to always walk into a clean and aesthetically pleasing environment. They want to feel safe and comfortable in your space to where it feels like home. It all comes down to setting the tone before you enter into doing your craft in any setting.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Both of my parents have been the most helpful this far in helping me overcome challenges I have come across on my journey and help develop the woman I am today. I feel it is so important to have those in your corner always rooting you on and believing in you more on the days when you may not yourself. Creating this space for others helps build genuine relationships in this field as well.
