We were lucky to catch up with Jim Kirlin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jim , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Resilience, for me, is deeply rooted in gratitude, community, and the lessons I’ve learned through life’s challenges. In my early life, i battled a lot of demons and depression. I even attempted suicide in my 20’s because i didnt understand resilience. That was a true life lesson and I learned where to pull strength from. Then, a few years ago, I was diagnosed with a form of dysautonomia, a condition that forced me to reevaluate how I approached both life and business. Balancing the demands of entrepreneurship while managing my health was no small feat, but it reinforced the importance of adaptability and focusing on what truly matters.
My wife has been an incredible source of strength throughout this journey. Not only did she step in to help take care of me during difficult times, but she also became my partner in navigating the often uncertain landscape of building Beachin Bash. Her support and belief in our shared vision were instrumental in keeping us moving forward, even on the hardest days.
As an entrepreneur, I’ve come to see setbacks as stepping stones. Building Beachin Bash taught me that success isn’t a straight path—it’s a series of pivots, fueled by determination and the people who believe in you. I draw resilience from the joy we create for others, the trust our clients place in us, and the incredible communities we serve.
Ultimately, resilience is about showing up. It’s about believing that even when the tides are rough, the sun will rise, and with purpose and persistence, extraordinary things can happen. That mindset drives me every day—in life, in business, and in the moments when challenges remind me why this journey is so worthwhile.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m the founder of Beachin Bash, an event company dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences along the Delaware coast. We specialize in luxury beach picnics, pontoon boat charter, and curating unique events that bring people together to celebrate life’s moments, big and small. Our mission is simple: to combine creativity, community, and exceptional service to deliver memories that last a lifetime.
What’s most exciting about Beachin Bash is how it blends the beauty of coastal living with the energy of celebration. Whether it’s a sunset picnic, a VIP bachelorette party at Paradise Grill, or a day out on the water, we thrive on crafting experiences that connect people to each other and the natural beauty of the beach.
Our commitment to compassionate capitalism sets us apart. We work with local vendors and small businesses to ensure our events support the community that inspires us. It’s not just about throwing great parties—it’s about being part of something bigger, fostering relationships, and uplifting others in the process.
We’re also excited about what’s on the horizon. In addition to expanding our event business and services , we are exploring some fun collabs with Chef Ben Robinson from Below Deck!
At its core, Beachin Bash is about joy. It’s about bringing people together, celebrating life, and embracing the magic of the beach. Whether you’re a guest at one of our events or partnering with us to create something special, we want every moment to feel extraordinary.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities have been instrumental in my journey: adaptability, relationship-building, and vision. Each one played a crucial role in building Beachin Bash and navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.
Adaptability
The ability to pivot and embrace change has been key. No matter how well you plan, life and business often throw curveballs. For me, this became especially true after being diagnosed with a form of dysautonomia, which taught me the importance of adjusting to circumstances without losing sight of my goals. I often think of one of my favorite quotes by Zig Ziglar: “If you learn from defeat, you haven’t really lost.” Every challenge I’ve faced has been an opportunity to grow stronger and wiser.
Advice: Learn to approach setbacks with curiosity instead of frustration. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” The more you practice adapting, the more resilient you’ll become. Life and business are fluid—embracing that mindset can help you thrive.
Relationship-Building
Success is rarely a solo endeavor. Building strong, authentic relationships with clients, collaborators, and your community is a game-changer. Beachin Bash is built on a foundation of trust and collaboration with incredible local vendors, partners, and clients who share our vision. I’ve also found that relationships thrive when we approach them with an open heart and a focus on giving rather than receiving. As I like to say: “Look in the mirror today. If you don’t see the solution, then you are looking at the problem. One’s soul will see the truth.”
Advice: Prioritize genuine connections over transactions. Show up for others, be a good listener, and always aim to provide value. People are at the heart of every business, and strong relationships will take you further than you can imagine.
Vision
Having a clear sense of purpose has guided me through both the highs and the lows. For me, success isn’t about chasing money—it’s about building something meaningful and lasting. I believe that when you focus on success—defined by honesty, ethics, community, and giving back—the money will eventually follow. Focusing solely on money can lead to decisions that lack heart or purpose. True success means being a good friend and family member, investing time in what builds character, and showing love to others. When you fill others up, you’ll find your own cup overflowing.
Advice: Take time to define your “why.” Why are you doing this? What impact do you want to make? Write it down, refer to it often, and let it serve as your compass. A strong vision will keep you grounded and focused.
For those just starting out, my biggest advice is to stay open to learning. Entrepreneurship is a journey of constant growth. Be adaptable, invest in meaningful relationships, and never lose sight of your purpose. When you align your actions with your values and serve with love and intention, the rewards go far beyond what money can provide. Remember, constructive criticism is your friend, not your enemy. Dont get defensive, stay nuanced and positive. positive thinking will get you way farther than negative thinking ever will
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
One book that has profoundly influenced both my personal and professional development is How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. It’s a timeless classic that offers practical advice on building meaningful relationships, communicating effectively, and inspiring others—a must-read for anyone, especially entrepreneurs.
One of the most impactful lessons from the book is the importance of genuine interest in others. Carnegie emphasizes that people want to feel seen, valued, and understood. In building Beachin Bash, this principle has guided how I approach every interaction, whether it’s with a client, a partner, or a team member. Relationships thrive when they’re built on authenticity and mutual respect.
Another key takeaway is the power of empathy and listening. Carnegie’s advice to “try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view” has helped me navigate difficult situations and find win-win solutions. This mindset not only strengthens relationships but also fosters trust—a cornerstone of our success at Beachin Bash.
Lastly, the book’s message about encouraging others and expressing appreciation resonates deeply with me. People want to feel valued for their contributions, and a simple “thank you” or word of encouragement can go a long way. I’ve applied this lesson in both my personal life and in cultivating a positive, collaborative environment for my team.
How to Win Friends and Influence People isn’t just a book—it’s a guide for building a life and business centered on connection, understanding, and shared success. If you’re looking to grow in relationships and leadership, it’s an invaluable resource.
