We were lucky to catch up with Olivia Powell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Olivia, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Over the years, I was always known as “the quiet girl.” The thing is, I wasn’t shy, I was just always observing my surroundings and if I wasn’t in the position or environment that made me comfortable, I would close out the world. I have always had a genuine love for people, always wanted to put a smile on people’s face or make them feel valued but I wasn’t getting that back in return which ultimately led me to feel as if I couldn’t be myself. This lead to me questioning my confidence. As I got older, lack of self-identity and not being able to express myself affected my life as a creative. I no longer wanted to act, sing or dance. I just wanted to be in my own element where I felt safe. It became a domino affect and I began to lose opportunities that I once had. One day, I got up and told myself that I have to trust myself and the world deserves to feel the love I have have to give and see my talents. You have to affirm yourself even when no one else does. Once you realize that you began to build your community and people who are in alignment with your character start to come around you and believe in your just as much as you believe in yourself. That is where my confidence came from.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Even though I like to be creative in all aspects, for the past year or so I have been focusing on journalism. I think it is amazing to be able to write creative piece that “wows” the world, to create imagery by orchestrating words that flow together to become one. Journalism not only consist of writing, but also photography and personal interviews with your muses. Thinking back to the creative journey I have been on over the years, I began to think about how many creatives like me that do not conform to just one niche. There are so many creatives that are multi talented and want to grow in their fields but lack community, which I have in the past. While I have been on my journalism journey, I also cooked up the idea of Her Legacy Media, a media group that empowers women to have the confidence to continue their media journey and shape the world of media as we know it with love. Currently, we are building and growing Her Legacy Media into not only a company but a community as well. We want to make everyone feel loved and supported within our community no matter how much of an expertise they have, there is always room for growth. Our plan is to do a hard launch in January 2025 but we have already acquired many business collaborations already and we are ready to dive in.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that I have learned are essential: being patient, agile and true to yourself. Patient because you have to sometimes wait on others to set things off even though your ideas may be solidified. Agile because the tables will turn and you have to know how to turn with them. Everyday holds something different being a creative and that is the best part in my opinion. No day is the same as the last. Lastly, staying true to yourself stops you from falling in the realm of imposter sydrome. You are you and that is it. You will never be anyone else so you have to show the world what makes you, you. It is so easy to get caught up in the motion of the media world but you have to stay focused on what you goal is and how you want you creativity to impact society.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I love to read self-improvement books. One of my all time favorites that has helped me on this journey is Atomic Habits by James Clear. I always advise everyone I cross-paths with that are entrepreneurs to read it because it builds self awareness. Wisdom is knowing yourself and your flaws and being able to revamp your life. A lot of things that transpire in our lives happens because of the habits that we have accrued over time.
