Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Patricia Segura. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Patricia, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As a first-generation Latina artist, my journey has often felt discouraging. Being the only one in my family navigating the path to pursue my passion in the animation industry can sometimes feel isolating, especially when faced with a lack of understanding or support. There are many moments when I hear the words “keep it as a hobby” or “pursue something safer,” and those voices can linger in my mind. But despite these challenges, I remain purposeful to myself. I know, deep down, that this is the path I am meant to follow.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from successful individuals across all fields is this: it doesn’t matter if a million people tell you that you can or can’t succeed, in the end, it is up to you to tell yourself YOU can. You are the only one who can shape your future. For me, the driving force behind my work is not that validation from others, but an internal passion—an unwavering love for creating my animations and illustrations. It’s this love that fuels my persistence and inspires me to push forward, even when the road ahead seems uncertain. When you remain purposeful to yourself, you start to forget that you are the only one in the room.
To this day, I am so passionate about this journey, not just because of the potential for success, but because creating art is who I am. And no matter the obstacles, I will continue to create, driven by my passion and the belief that my art can be expressed, and create inspiration.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m currently a student set to graduate with an associate’s degree in Animation in May 2025! Outside of my studies, I love illustrating and animating stories inspired by the small, yet meaningful experiences of my everyday life. Growing up in a Hispanic household has given me a unique perspective that I find both relatable and humorous—something many people can connect with. I often illustrate and animate my favorite music albums, and I enjoy experimenting by animating over music videos as a way to practice and refine my skills.
Right now, I’m focusing on creating more animations that reflect Hispanic experiences—not just the typical Instagram reels, but stories that truly represent and honor my culture. With my mom from Venezuela and my dad growing up in a Chicano household, I share these experiences with pride and authenticity. I believe it’s important to highlight what my culture means to me and how it shapes the stories I want to tell.
As I continue to grow as an artist, I’m excited to collaborate with other creatives and get my work out into the world. I’m passionate about using animation as a tool to spread awareness and express the richness of my heritage while continuing to develop my voice and craft.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first quality I value is embrace discomfort. Staying comfortable keeps you safe yes… but stepping outside your comfort zone helps you grow. You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish when you push past fear and embrace challenges.
Second, networking is essential. Building relationships with people from all aspects of life opens doors to new opportunities, advice, and insights that can enrich your journey and success
Lastly, patience is key. Success takes time, and every experience, good or bad teaches you something valuable. Trust the process and learn from each step along the way.
These qualities have guided me to where I need to be
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love transforming creative visions into reality, offering expertise in animation, illustration, graphic design, and print. I collaborate with individuals and businesses alike, regardless of their artistic skills, to enhance their ideas and bring them to life.
Whether you’re looking to elevate your brand, develop unique products, or bring an imaginative project to life, I am dedicated to making your vision happen. I love to partner with those who value creativity and want to explore its potential to drive their work forward.
If you’re ready to turn your ideas into something great, let’s connect. Together, we can create work that stands out and resonates.
