We recently connected with Anthony Taormina and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I joined the military at 21, and discipline was ingrained in me during the early years of my adult life. After serving for 12 years, I quickly realized that once I left, there was no one there to hold me to a standard—it was on me to maintain that discipline. I learned that it’s a perishable skill, one that can easily slip away if you’re not consistently doing the things that are difficult. For me, self-discipline is about keeping the promises you make to yourself, even when it’s hard, and holding yourself accountable
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started Anthony’s Portable Restrooms in January of 2020. Just two months later, when COVID shut the world down, business doubled overnight. That rapid change was a huge turning point—what would have taken the company five years of slow growth happened in less than one year. As demand skyrocketed, I quickly realized I couldn’t handle all the work myself, and the challenge of hiring employees became our next hurdle. But with that came the opportunity to expand our services, offering luxury restroom trailers and temporary fencing solutions.
What started with small construction projects and residential parties soon evolved into large-scale events, including concerts, fairs, and even Hollywood filming productions.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I was just figuring things out as I went along. The key was being willing to put in the hard work and dedication required to get the results I wanted. That first year, most of my nights were spent sleeping in the work truck or on the couch in the office, not at home in bed. It was tough, but it was part of the grind. Sure, you’re going to miss out on some parties, work over the holidays, and spend less time with family. People may even leave you along the way. But it’s all going to be worth it in the end.
If I had to offer advice to anyone starting out on the path of business ownership, it would be this: It’s all going to work out. Stay committed to your goals and never grow weary of striving for the results you want. Make decisions and stick to them, but also be willing to make small 1% pivots along the way to course-correct when necessary. It’s all part of the journey, and persistence always gives a return.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
There have been several people and resources that have been incredibly helpful in helping me overcome challenges and develop the essential skills needed for success. I’ve gained a lot of value from podcasts and free content put out by entrepreneurs. Andy Frisella and Vaughn Kohler’s The MFCEO Project was instrumental in guiding me through some tough early stages of business. I’ve also learned a lot from individuals like Ed Mylett, Justin Cross of Earn It All, David Goggins, Patrick Bet-David, Tim Grover, and Michael Franzese—their stories and lessons have shaped my mindset.
On a more personal level, I’ve had a close friend, Dr. Dicarie Williamson, who has been a huge support. He’s been there for me when I’ve been down, offering advice and encouragement. His support has been invaluable in helping me stay the course.
