Meet Kelcey Fisher

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelcey Fisher. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Kelcey, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?

That one I think I was born with. My friends know that if you tell me I can’t do something, I’m either going to do it or try really hard and learn from it eventually. My parents also brought me up on giving everything I do in life 100%. I’ve definitely gone down the wrong path with that mentality once or thrice but when pointed in the right direction it’s been extremely fulfilling. If it doesn’t work out at least I gave it my all and in the end the biggest risks I’ve taken in life have been the most educational as well as the most rewarding.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a fine artist, muralist and designer. I change styles often. I’m always pushing myself to try out new schools of art and work with new materials. Whatever style I fall in now will be completely different in 6 months. For myself it’s been the best way to grow and challenge myself creatively. I’ll also be moving into more sculptures and clothing design this year. I’m really excited to share that with everyone.

Currently I just finished one of my largest development projects which included two large murals at the new Alloy building in the LA Arts District. One of which faces the 4th street bridge and I surprised my girlfriend with using her face for it. Go check it out.

I’m also staring a new series called EMPiRiCAL where I’ll be painting 12 surrealist pieces telling some of my life story and how I got here. I’ll be designing them to reflect pivotal moments in my life through battles with addiction, car crashes, jail, should be a fun ride. I’ll also be narrating pieces of the story upon releasing each piece. I’m hoping it’s a cathartic experience and can bring some solace to those out there suffering as I did. I will also be working with a non profit to share some of the proceeds from sales.

To start the year I’ll be taking off to France for a month for what I call a destination commission. I offer clients the option to have me paint any place in the world and I’ll physically go there and paint it. I love experiencing other cultures and creating within them. One of my favourite parts about my job.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Be authentic to yourself and whatever you are doing. Trying to be someone who I wasn’t and creating what I thought people wanted almost killed me.

Create a community and give back to it. There is plenty to go around no matter what our society tries to make you think. There’s so much greed and hype in the world and it all stems from fear and ego. My community is full of individuals looking out for each other. I cherish those relationships. Some of my biggest opportunities came from them and vice versa.

Know that without a doubt you are going to be successful in whatever you are doing. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise including yourself.

Lastly just be a good human. Nothing to add on that one.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

They didn’t give up on me even when I gave up on myself and showed up when no one else was there. Love you Mom and Dad.
