Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sadithi De zilva. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sadithi , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
In total honesty, it feels like a double-edged sword. You know you stand out because no one else looks like you, but sometimes it feels like you’re representing your entire community. I’m still figuring out if my success is because I’m the only one in the room like me or despite it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Scrappack Productions is a passion project turned full-fledged independent production company, co-founded by Madeleine Coronato and Sadithi De Zilva (me)! Scrappack is a full-service film company that focuses on community building and being “scrappy” with our resources to make small resources stretch!
What sets us apart is our commitment to quality storytelling and community. We believe in fostering a creative environment where collaboration is key, and everyone’s voice is valued. We’re proud to say that we crowdfunded our recent projects with the support of an incredible community that trusted us to deliver. That trust and engagement drive us to continually raise the bar for ourselves and our work.
We’re still learning and it feels like every time we achieve something new( like finishing our first two short films!) we encounter a new obstacle (learning about llc taxes haha), but it’s obstacles that take us even further to our goals of providing minority and diverse voices with a platform and the support to bring their stories to life!
And a little about me? I am Sadithi De Zilva, a Sri Lankan-born, Hong Kong-raised actress, producer, writer, and co-founder of Scrappack Productions. My journey in the arts began when I was selected for the prestigious BRAVO-LAMDA program, which gave me a strong foundation in performance. I later graduated with honors from Pace University’s BFA Acting program, further rdeveloping my passion for storytelling. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of acting in films like “Teething” (2017), “The Silent” (2018), and most recently, “Just One More Thing” (2024), a project I also co-produced through Scrappack Productions. Beyond film, I’ve collaborated with Moxie Arts on their incubator program and appeared in the play “Vermont”, written by Rachel Carey. Balancing my roles as a performer and producer has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to bring stories to life both in front of and behind the camera.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My business partner, Madeline, is incredible with people. She truly wears her heart on her sleeve, making everyone feel safe and comfortable. I truly couldn’t have started this company without her. Finding people that you mesh with and deeply enjoy working with is such a luxury and I’m so lucky to find that! That also extends to the INCREDIBLE crews we find for our sets!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes! Always! That is what Scrappack is all about! If you are interested in interesting stories, scrappy filmmaking and community! Please reach out!!
