We recently connected with Laura-marie Jenks and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura-Marie, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
For self-care I look to spirituality, I’m a passionate crystal healer and colour therapist. I put these practises into my day to day routine as much as I can, as well as meditation. I feel connected and grounded this way, I enjoy these practises as well as a couple rituals I like to partake in. Since I started exploring colour therapy in March of 2022, I’ve found a beautiful healing energy in being able to read myself and other peoples essences/their auras. I love getting lost in a good book too, disconnecting from the tech in the world and just escaping. Recently I’ve been enjoying the Court Of Thorns And Roses series by Sarah J. Maas and the twisted fairy tales that Emily McIntire creates through her Never After series.
I feel these parts of my routine have improved my mental health, especially not being on social media, I only use my phone when I need to make a call or something, I’m not a tech lover.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Music Entrepreneur
As a teen, Jenks supported musicians getting gigs, festivals, and airtime. She’d spend her days phoning around her local music venues and further afield for opportunities to arise, running merchandise tables on tour. After completing The Princes Trust business course in 2015, Laura-Marie Jenks debuted in the local music scene of Plymouth, announcing numerous endeavours within the music industry, such as owning her music agency and promotions company, Still Hangin’ Promotions. Jenks would go on to showcase artists of all genres in local music venues, the Underground and The Junction, as well as venues all over the UK and US. As well as owning her agency, the breakout venture was becoming a record label representative for Outsider Records and Punk Babylon Records. This led to Jenks being noticed by Event UK, leading her to review music from upcoming artists of a mixture of genres in 2018 for Slice The Pie. In 2022 after a short break, Laura-Marie returned to the music industry with 24/7 Stage & Crew, one of the leading crew companies in Britain. This led her to become a sound engineer and producer, working with independent artists as well as mainstream musicians. Currently Laura-Marie is working as part of the board at the Barbican Theatre in Plymouth, she continues to produce music to this day.
Model
Jenks has opened up about her struggles with body dysmorphia, confirming on The Christian Reeve Podcast she doesn’t have social media due to the pressures. She said, “I honestly believe social media is the devil, I feel it’s evil, in the past when I’ve had social media I’ve had someone post for me, the apps even being on my phone give me anxiety.” Despite her struggles with body dysmorphia, Jenks made a name for herself within the modelling industry in her mid-teens. Known for boudoir modelling ~ a photographic style featuring intimate, sensual, romantic, and sometimes erotic images. Laura-Marie has worked with local photographers Lauren Blue Photography and Jojo The Photographer, as well as travelling for shoots. Jenks continues to model to this day.
Writer
Laura-Marie made her debut with her poetry book From The Ashes: Poems From Poisonous Love Affairs in November 2024. Giving voices to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, the poetry collection has elements of Grimms’ Fairy Tales as well as metaphors however nothing is fictional. While she hasn’t named the people she has written about, she told The Christian Reeve Podcast, “This is not an exposay, a memoir or burn book, I’ve only been publicly connected to a few people but I’ve been involved with a few others that I’ve never spoken about.”
From The Ashes: Poems From Poisonous Love Affairs is available to purchase on Amazon.
Personal Life
Jenks in March 2022, completed an online course in holistic colour therapy with Maya Carrington. Laura-Marie has spoken about colour therapy on The Magic And The Mind Podcast, “I’ve always been a spiritual person, I’ve found so much healing within myself since I’ve been taking part in colour therapy.” Colour therapy, also known as chromotherapy, is a form of therapy that uses colour and light to treat certain mental and physical health conditions.
Laura-Marie supports local charity, Beat 4 Autism ~ a charity that supports parents and carers with individuals living with autism. Run by Lizeta Fellows, the charity aims to create an autism friendly community in Torpoint. Jenks told The Christian Reeve Podcast, “I volunteered to be an elf last year for my local sensory grotto run by Beat 4 Autism. I loved every moment, this charity is so special to me, it was such a rewarding experience, cannot wait to do it all over again.”
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Honesty, communication and integrity, I feel were my three main qualities looking back to my early music career. Honesty was a key trait in all positions, but especially important in building trust with artists and music venues to build up connections. Throughout my next quality of communication, I was able to explore a wider range of artists and seek air time as well as festivals. Through this period within my career, my original idea of my booking agency turned into a little bit of everything. Integrity lead me through this path, forming an agency, promotions company and becoming a record label representative. My whole career has required me to be completely transparent, it’s always teaching me to have faith.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
In January 2024, I lost all forms of verification due to a media takedown. Everything regarding myself was removed from the internet including previous interviews and articles. Some of these articles included false claims regarding my previous relationship and character.
Jenks told Ocean City Radio, “The takedown was bitter sweet, it was a process I’ve been fighting for a couple years. I was portrayed in a way that was never me. When it all got taken down I lost everything, all the things that I was proud of too went with it.” She went on to add, “I should never have been associated with the man he was, maybe the universe was punishing me for making a bad choice. I’m so grateful to all the publications who stepped up and supported me throughout the process. I don’t have any bad energy towards anyone. It’s like I’ve been given a second chance to come back as a version of me that I want to represent, not a character that has been assigned to me. For that I’m grateful. ”
