Meet Malik Lowery

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Malik Lowery. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Malik below.

Malik, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creativity alive by constantly evaluating my life or life itself and all the experiences we have during it. Life throws something different at you every day and it really serves as my inspiration when it comes to my music. For example, I have a song called “Argue (feat. Meme Too Bougie & Safiya Jin)”. The song is an “Argument” or conversation between a male and a female who are dating and having relationship issues. Each party takes a turn expressing themselves to the other in order to try and gain an understanding and fix the issue. Safiya Jin’s part is in representation of the main thought that is going through anyone in this situations mind as they are about to engage in the argument or conversation…”I don’t wanna argue, I don’t wanna fight”. Think about it; isn’t that the main thing you are thinking when you get into an argument with your significant other? You don’t really want to be having this conversation or argument, right? Then you have Meme Too Bougie’s part which is the females perspective of things and the problems she has in the relationship along with what she wants out of the relationship. Then you have Safiya Jin once again with the males pre-thought. “I don’t wanna argue, I don’t wanna fight” followed by my verse (M4L1K) which is the male perspective and standpoint in the argument/conversation.

I base most of my music off of real-life situations that I have experienced therefore effectively having constant ideas and inspiration to keep creativity alive. Life can really inspire you if you let it.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I do a little bit of everything. I started out as just another aspiring rapper. However, I quickly learned that in order to be an effective standalone artist I have to have more than just skill in writing and recording music. I am first and foremost an artist (Rapper) however I also do Audio Engineering (Mixing and Mastering), Photography, Videography (Music Videos), Podcasts, & Content creation. I’m in the process of starting my own business entailing all of these different skills that I’ve developed. A media company; Malik Lowery Media or M.L.M, “We strive to #MakeLifeMatter” is our slogan.

It all started with rapping. I began to rap back in 2008-2009 with my high school best friend “Wesley Teague”. He was the one who wanted to be a rapper, but he didn’t want to do it alone, so I decided to do it with him to encourage him to chase his dream. Little did I know I would soon fall in love with rapping myself. I used to get bullied, Picked On, Clowned, and turned down by all the girls back in school so I had a lot of pent-up frustration and things I needed to express, and rap gave me an outlet to do so. It also gave me a way to voice my opinions without being judged or made fun of because of my standpoint on a particular issue. Soon after starting with my friend, it became a passion of mine and I’ve been rapping ever since!

Slowly but surely, I started looking into the other aspects of the music creation and release. This was because I didn’t have a lot of available money at hand being a high school student so If I wanted a cover art or a music video or a photoshoot, I had to do it myself. Thus, my YouTube learning journey commenced. All the skills I’ve gained in these different areas are results of long hours of video tutorials, internet research and studying the art created by famous or well-known/successful artists or creators and my own personal experience through actually doing the work.

So, in short, I write the music; record the music, mix and master the music then create a cover art for the music. I then will storyboard a music video concept and shoot the video after which I edit the video using tools like Adobe Premiere. Besides that I create content like comedy interviews like my new series “Awkwarviews: The most Awkward and/or Uncomfortable Interview on the Planet” that just started on TikTok. You can go check it out at https://www.tiktok.com/@m_l_media and https://www.tiktok.com/@thisism4l1k. You can also check out my photography on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisism4l1k. All of my current music is on Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TIDAL & many more under the artist name: M4L1K for your audio enjoyment and the songs can be found and used for reels or other such content on all major social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think the three qualities, skills or area of knowledge that were most impactful on my journey was Perserverance (Quality), Audio Engineering (Skill) and the knowledge of oneself and what message you are trying to convey. All art speaks and as an artist you need to know what your art is speaking about in order to induce an experience or feeling in the partaker of the art.

My best advice on how to increase these skills are as follows:

Perserverance – Make a habit of not giving up. Finish whatever you start even if you don’t get the result, you are really trying to get. This will get you in the habit of toughing it out and getting together a finished product. Getting a finished product ready to release is one of the most important things as an artist or creator because without a finished product you have nothing to represent you. Nothing to show. People want works and if you can’t provide them then you have nothing to show that labels you as an artist or creator or is ready for the masses to consume. Without finished work you can release you’ll make no progress. It’s also important because you have to have the grit to keep going even when it’s tough. This will serve you well in many aspects of life and teach you that you can do whatever it is your trying to do as long as you stick to it.

Audio Engineering – Because nobody knows how you should/want to sound better than yourself. Imagine not having to go through the trouble of trying to explain to someone else how you hear a song sounding in your head and what type of effects you’re trying to use or what you’re trying to sound like. Imagine just having the know-how of how to achieve that perfect sound you’ve been looking for. I get so much more music done because I am able to record myself. This cuts out travel time to a studio along with waiting on someone else to mix and master and edit my music, so I am functioning on my own timeline. Plus there will always be artists who want to focus solely on creating (writing/recording) the music and so you’ll have a potential source of income if you can provide that service. it also allows you to experiment with different types of sounds or mixing techniques to fine a sound or style that is unique to you.

Knowledge of oneself – The reason why I say this is because if you know yourself you can bring yourself to the table as a whole experience. The art is an extension and expression of the artist and if you don’t know yourself your art may convey messages that don’t necessarily align with you. This will give the partaker of the art a false sense of “You” and you won’t develop that true connection between creator and audience that I feel is essential to become a great. Knowing yourself just makes your art more authentic.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am currently looking to collaborate with more Rappers & Singers. I am looking for people that have a message behind what they are saying or true emotion backing up their art. I want people who can create and experience, not just a song.
