Meet Betsy Ronel

We were lucky to catch up with Betsy Ronel recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Betsy, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is self imposed. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t felt it if only for a minute.
I overcame it in two ways: one, when I listened to people I respect talk about their anxieties as they rose through the ranks. And two: once I’d had enough of feeling less than when I knew without a doubt I was THE best for certain things.
So I just went for it and never looked back. I don’t let those negative fleeting thoughts take hold anymore. I know I’m at the table for a reason that I earned!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a licensed NYS Real Estate Associate Broker. I chose to work in real estate after one of my own home sales went terribly wrong. I was the buyer and I was the easiest buyer. The person I was buying my house from and their agent were a mess. They were not transparent; there were liens on the house I wanted; everything was a circus. And it didn’t end. Until it did 3 months later after I had been through an unnecessary amount of stress.
The listing agent didn’t seem to care and just went on as business as usual. I thought it can be so much better than this and no one deserves this callous treatment. So my calling was clear. I knew I would never let anyone in my care go through that.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three abilities that I have found critical in growing a business and succeeding are:
1. Get back up: no matter how many times you get knocked down, you get right back up and stand even taller.
2. Positive self talk: no one can support you like you can. You must encourage yourself, give yourself breaks, give yourself grace.
3. Outwork everyone: When you’re new all you have is your name and your work ethic. So you get in there and find ways to outwork all your competitors.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

My parents always had expectations of me. I was to live by our family’s values. And I did not want to disappoint them because it wouldn’t feel good if I did.
Their expectations were to the tune of: show kindness, be honest, be clear, work smart and hard, be true to your word.
These are some values I have lived by from my earliest memories and have imparted to my children. It’s an easy way to live!
