Hi Mehreen, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
I avoid burnout by the implementation of the following tactics:
1. Breaking down my workload into smaller and more manageable chunks. I usually make a weekly agenda at the beginning of my week to visualize my objectives, as well as how long each task will take.
2. I create a lot of downtime for myself between travelling and events. A lot of it revolves around self care and spending time with my loved ones, since I find these things to be grounding.
3. I make sure that my personal space is delcuttered at all times, with very little mess. It’s incredible how much your physical work environment can influence your thought process and productivity!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the Founder and CEO of the BAEgency, an agency which helps promote fashion, entertainment, and hospitality brands through the tools of Brand Activations and Events (BAE). I launched this business in response to the amplification of offline marketing post COVID. By leveraging my network of creative brands, project management capabilities, and acumen for marketing strategy to promote brands through the lens of experiential marketing, my goal is to allow brands to establish a more meaningful connection with consumers, all while shining light on POC (People of Colour) and female owned businesses. In 2023, my agency was hired to run the entire runway production and event operation for an organization that represents an assortment of bespoke luxury brands across Nigeria, which was part of the official London Fashion Week calendar. I applied careful creative curation and seamless coordination of the designers, models, volunteers, and rehearsal agenda to deliver an impeccable brand and customer experience. Apart from London Fashion week, I’ve been involved with New York Fashion Week by working on the runway production of an futuristic Afroluxury brand, and also a private members-only “Sip and Shop” brand popup event in collaboration with Soho House New York, to feature three emerging brands aligned with the Soho House ethos. Currently, I’m in the process of expanding my service to high end hospitality and entertainment brands, with an emphasis on major global cities.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The following personal qualities have contributed to making my journey impactful:
1. Resourcefulness: Use everything as an opportunity to sharpen your skills and move forward, because you don’t know where it will lead you and who you will meet as a consequence.
2. Resilience: In the face of adversity, it’s important to adapt quickly and continue to move forward with strength and determination, all while growing and learning from these experiences.
3. Innovation: Creative approaches to solving problems are what have allowed me access to opportunities that would otherwise be “impossible” for me to attain.
To best develop these qualities, I would advise people to learn to get comfortable with ambiguity, since these situations provide the optimal opportunity to adapt, be resilient, and think innovatively.
