Meet Carile Smith

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carile Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Carile, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I believe it is important to remember who you are and that God has given each of us a unique gift. Always thrive with the understanding that you are placed in any room for a reason.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I currently own and operate a property management company, and I also engage in buying and selling real estate. I decided to focus more on the management aspect of real estate after noticing during my time at larger management companies that individuals who looked like me were often considered last when bidding during the application process. Additionally, I observed that properties owned by non-Caucasian homeowners received less priority. I wanted to make a positive change and help address these issues, as I genuinely enjoy serving the community.

In addition to my work in real estate, I am an independent author. I self-published a book titled “FIFTEEN,” which is the first in a series. I am currently working on a sequel called “21,” as well as a documentary related to my life.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

God
faithfulness
Perseverance
I would tell anyone who is working to accomplish their goals to keep going even when it is hard and you can’t see the other side always know that one day it will work out but if you quit how would you ever know?

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

My biggest obstacle is being too hard on myself. I often feel that I should be working harder or that I should have achieved more by now. I constantly remind myself that what God wants me to have will come at the right time, as long as I keep putting in the effort.
