We recently connected with Katie Hughes and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
For self-care I usually will go shopping with my friends and we will go eat lunch or dinner. If they are not available, I will go tanning at the salon and will go get coffee and will just ride around listening to my playlist. Self- care is so important to me because of my career is to take care of other people and their hair as that is what I do for a living. So, I forget to take care of myself. But I’ve learned to make time.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Katie and I am from Birmingham, Alabama. I am 29 years old. I don’t have kids but I do have a cat named Cleo. However, what I am focused on professionally is my career in cosmetology and growing my clientele. I post regularly on my Instagram page and I’ve gotten business that way successfully. I graduated from Paul Mitchell in 2018. Now, I am a master stylist at Ulta Beauty. What I feel that is so exciting about my career is that I get to hear so many stories from my clients and everything that is going on in their life. Sometimes it does get emotional. But, for the most part we are laughing and having a great time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back the three quality skills to have that have impacted my journey is being a team player, practice your skills, and being confident in yourself. I feel like these are the top three qualities to have that can help you early on.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing that my parents did for me was support me and my career and helped me get the education that I needed. They helped pay for my tools and made sure I had everything I needed to be successful for my career and I couldn’t think them enough.
