We recently connected with Jane Elizabeth Dennis and have shared our conversation below.
Jane Elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I enjoy taking time to focus on a subject, theme or process intentionally for a specific outcome – for many years, I designed and made clothing; or learned to crochet and create patterns. For painting, I feel most creative when I slow down and appreciate a simple scene, there is potential to record and share that bit of inspiration.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My focus is creative problem solving. I love to tackle challenges during the day as a Supply Management Specialist for Hydraulic Service Parts and by evening and weekend as an artist – intending to engage viewers with my perspective of subject, color and composition. Often, I take the same subject and repeat with a variety of color palettes to determine if the results are different or similar, better or worse.
Blocking time to paint, either at Plein Air events or in preparation for events is the current chapter of my Art Journey. Next up for March 2025 is a Gallery Backroom Booking in my hometown at Arts on Main, Picton, Ontario.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that continue to impact my journey positively are: listening carefully, speaking kindly, and giving generously.
Spending time reading and listening to people who connect well is great way to both understand others and then carefully choose words for daily conversation. Generosity can be in time, energy and talent – or any combination of those three; also, making sure you have enough of these to sustain yourself, and then extra to spare, is essential.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My mother would have to be named as the most helpful in providing the foundational resolve to meet challenges and pay attention to detail, regardless of the situation or task. That effort and concentration on the little things grew to an eagerness to develop all the other essential skills that have led me to where I am now.
