We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Niya Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Niya, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
My creativity stays alive through life experiences, including the events I attend, the connections I build, the emotions I fully feel & understand, the environments/rooms I walk in, and the goals I set and accomplish. Previous artworks I’ve done also pours into keeping my creativity alive.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a multidimensional artist. The most exciting thing about it is the continuous expansion of my creative expressions. There are so many ways that I tap into my creativity, whether it’s through dancing, jewelry making, fashion, canvas art, poems, or collaborations. There’s always something new to learn about myself and the world around me, and that’s my main focus in life. It’s all about the process and moving through life one day at a time. There’s so much that this world has to offer, and I’m excited to see what it has in store for me.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
An important quality is an open mindset. An important skill is emotional regulation, and an important area of knowledge is financial literacy. These three were the most impactful because they helped me understand how the real world works and how I can survive, thrive, and succeed in it. My advice on how to develop these is complex, there are many layers to character development, but what I will say is; don’t be afraid to ask questions when you don’t understand something and learn how to take things as they are. Don’t take things personally and also try going out into new environments and educating yourself on things you don’t know. Fully understanding these things is a journey, so don’t rush it.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I think it’s better to be well rounded, improving on areas I’m not strong in, but also accepting that some areas I’m just not fit for. For example, I’m aware that one of my strengths is teamwork. I also know that I’m improving my communication & comprehension skills in certain environments and situations with people. But I also know for a fact, that I cannot exist in an emotionally draining environment because it’s not where my conflict resolution skills are the strongest, so I accept that weakness. Acceptance leads to grace, and with that, I can learn more about myself and the world around me. I believe it’s all about finding the balance between strengths & weaknesses.
