Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eri King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Eri, thank you so much for joining us and opening up about the very personal topic of divorce. So many in the community are going through or have gone through divorce and we think hearing about how others dealt with the aftermath and managed to build a vibrant, successful life and career despite the trauma of divorce can be helpful to many who might be feeling a degree of hopelessness. So, maybe you can talk to us about how you overcame divorce?
“A crisis is an opportunity! I was born to experience it this way. The more you resist the flow, the more you will struggle and suffer. If you let go and ride the wave of excitement without attachment, you can overcome anything!”
This realization became clear to me during the most challenging period of my life—my divorce.
I was born and raised in Japan. My first marriage was to a Japanese man, and after 20 years of marriage, I found myself getting divorced. The cause of the divorce was my ex-husband’s infidelity.
I had suspected the affair for some time, and just as I was preparing to start a side business offering massage and facial services, the affair was revealed.
When I discovered the truth, I was devastated. My emotional state plummeted, my health suffered, and I withdrew from life, isolating myself at home for a long time.
I remember feeling overwhelmed with fear about the divorce, unable to shake the anxiety. It felt like my entire world was falling apart.
But one day, something shifted. I don’t recall the exact moment, but I began to think, “I’ve worked so hard all these years. Maybe it’s time I reward myself. How can I acquire a new skill for the future?” That thought sparked a shift in my mindset—from sadness to excitement.
So, what did I want to do next?
I had never studied abroad, so I wanted to experience living overseas.
I had never lived on my own, so I longed to try independent living.
And, to support myself financially, I wanted to improve my massage skills.
As I reflected on these goals, I realized that Hawaii could be the perfect place to make them a reality.
Hawaii seemed like the ideal place. As a Japanese person with no English skills, it felt familiar and safe, which was reassuring. Moreover, Hawaii is home to the traditional Lomi Lomi massage, something I was eager to learn.
So, I decided: I’m going to Hawaii!
In 2012, I moved to Hawaii to study massage therapy. It was there that I met the man who would become my husband, and now, I live in the United States.
To the me of 2011, the one crying every day and consumed by anxiety, I want to say:
“You’re going to be okay! You’ll be doing the work you love, living happily in Hawaii with your wonderful new husband.”
And if you’re facing a crisis or standing at a crossroad in your life right now, I want to share this message with you:
“A crisis is an opportunity! I was born to experience it this way. The more you resist the flow, the more you will struggle and suffer. If you let go and ride the wave of excitement without attachment, you can overcome anything!”
Divorce may seem like the collapse of your current reality, and yes, it brings pain. But at the same time, it also represents a chance for a fresh start and personal growth.
It may be difficult right now, but as things fall apart, they create space for you to rediscover what truly matters to you. It’s a chance to reconnect with your authentic self.
The lessons and new perspectives you gain through this process will make you stronger and wiser. By letting go of attachment, embracing flexibility, and accepting change, you can lay the foundation for the next stage of your life.
If you choose to view this as an opportunity to reinvent yourself and approach it with a positive mindset, you will experience profound growth and transformation.
“Your mindset shapes your reality.”
You’ll be fine. If I could do it, so can you.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello, my name is ERI KING.
I work as a freelance massage therapist and esthetician in Hawaii, and I also offer healing and reading sessions using tuning forks.
Currently, I am mainly working at Cocolomi Massage, which has two locations in Hawaii (Waikiki and Ala Moana).
I was captivated by the traditional Hawaiian Lomilomi massage and in 2013, I learned it from a Kumulomi(master of Lomilomi) on the Big Island.
In 2024, I became a certified tuning fork healer through Wave Studio.
Although Lomilomi and tuning forks may seem very different, they are actually quite similar. Both are healing techniques aimed at restoring energy balance.
Starting in 2025, I will begin offering tuning fork healing sessions at Hawaii Welina Massage.
In my facial treatments, I use techniques that focus on thorough lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness and dullness. If requested, I also offer training in these techniques.
As part of my non-profit activities, I occasionally offer a collaborative healing session combining crystal bowls and tuning forks.
I also distribute a newsletter in Japanese, where I share insights on maintaining physical and mental health, living joyfully from a soul perspective, and connecting with higher consciousness and the universal laws.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge in my journey have been:
1. Being Mindful of the Vibration You Emit
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the importance of the energy, frequency, and vibration that I put out into the world. As Nikola Tesla once said, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.” It’s crucial to keep my energy and frequency positive, vibrant, and emotionally and mentally elevated. Everything in this world vibrates, and understanding how to harness and direct those vibrations allows us to create the life we desire.
2. Consciousness of Integration
I’ve used teachings from the Emerald Tablet, the Kybalion, and the Tree of Life in Kabbalah as guiding principles in my life. A common theme across these teachings is the emphasis on “integration” and “harmony.” The goal is to align with universal laws and achieve oneness with the divine. Integration with oneself and others ultimately leads to unity. By adopting this mindset of integration and harmony, judgment dissolves, self-forgiveness becomes easier, and forgiving others becomes more natural, creating a much more peaceful and fulfilling life.
3. Making Your Work Your Hobby
I believe the best way to approach life and work is to make your work your hobby. When you are passionate about what you do, every day becomes enjoyable, and you may not even feel the need to take breaks. By focusing on improving your skills, you naturally invest in yourself, and you stop spending money on unnecessary things. For example, when I am engaged in activities like massage, facials, or working with tuning forks, I feel immense joy and rarely feel the need to take a rest.
Advice for Those Early in Their Journey:
For those who are just starting, my advice is simple:
Be mindful of your vibration. Keep your energy positive and your mental and emotional states elevated. The energy you emit will return to you in ways you might not expect.
Focus on integration and harmony. Strive for unity with yourself and others. When you live without judgment, forgiving yourself and others becomes much easier, leading to a more peaceful life.
Make your work your passion. Find a job that excites you and treat it like a hobby. When you love what you do, you won’t need breaks or external rewards to feel fulfilled.
Once you’ve embraced these principles, everything—money, opportunities, and relationships—will come to you at the right time.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The book that has played an important role in my development is The Kybalion. One of the most impactful pieces of wisdom from the book comes from the Principle of Correspondence: “As above, so below; as within, so without.” This phrase, which also appears in the Emerald Tablet, expresses a profound philosophical truth: our inner consciousness shapes our external reality. When things aren’t going well, instead of blaming the outside world, it’s essential to turn inward and examine ourselves. This shift in perspective has been instrumental in my personal growth.
