We recently connected with Sarah Coupland and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my dad. He’s been a business owner since I was little, and I’ve watched him navigate the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. Even when he had a business that failed, he didn’t give up. Instead, he started over and kept pushing until something worked. His resilience, intelligence, and determination taught me that setbacks are just stepping stones to success. Those lessons have shaped not only my career but also my mindset in helping others achieve their goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a marketing specialist and social media manager, but more than that, I’m someone who deeply understands the challenges small businesses face. My journey started with my own business, which I ran for eight years. It was a venture I poured my heart into, but like many others, it faced challenges during COVID-19 and ultimately closed. While it was hard to let go, that experience became the foundation of my current work. I learned so much through trial and error, and now, I focus on helping other businesses avoid the pitfalls I faced.
What makes my work exciting and special is that I tailor my services to be accessible and affordable for small businesses that are trying to grow, expand, refresh their image, or simply stay relevant in today’s competitive market. I don’t just bring marketing strategies to the table; I bring empathy, insight, and solutions that work for businesses at any stage.
Professionally, my focus is on empowering small businesses to tell their stories effectively through social media and marketing. I teach them how to leverage content creation, branding, and digital tools, helping them thrive in areas they might otherwise feel overwhelmed.
Currently, I’m expanding my offerings to include workshops and classes on content creation and social media management. These are designed for small business owners who want to learn how to take control of their marketing or for individuals interested in starting their own social media side hustles.
Ultimately, my brand is about community and growth. I believe that when one small business succeeds, it uplifts the entire community, and I’m passionate about being part of that ripple effect.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to learn.
Resilience was crucial because entrepreneurship is full of highs and lows. When my business of eight years closed, it would have been easy to give up. Instead, I viewed it as an opportunity to learn and grow. My advice to those early in their journey is to embrace challenges as part of the process. Setbacks are inevitable, but they don’t define you—how you respond to them does.
Adaptability has been equally important. The business world, especially marketing and social media, is constantly evolving. I’ve had to stay flexible and open to change, learning new platforms, trends, and strategies as they emerge. For those starting out, my advice is to stay curious and willing to pivot when necessary. Don’t get too comfortable with one way of doing things; instead, commit to lifelong learning.
The willingness to learn has probably been the most valuable skill of all. I’m completely self-taught in marketing and social media management, learning through trial and error, research, and hands-on experience. For anyone starting out, I’d encourage you to take advantage of free resources, experiment, and never be afraid to ask questions. The more you invest in your knowledge, the more you’ll have to offer.
Ultimately, these qualities have not only shaped my career but also how I approach helping others. If you focus on building resilience, staying adaptable, and being open to continuous learning, you’ll be prepared for whatever challenges and opportunities come your way.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge I’m currently facing is scaling my business while staying true to my mission of being affordable and accessible for small businesses. As my client base grows, it’s tempting to focus solely on larger, higher-paying opportunities, but my passion lies in helping small businesses thrive, those that may not have big budgets but have big dreams.
To overcome this, I’m working on streamlining my processes and leveraging tools that allow me to serve more clients efficiently without compromising on quality. I’m also expanding my offerings to include workshops and online courses. These will enable me to help more people at once while keeping my services budget-friendly for small business owners.
Additionally, I’m focusing on building a strong network of partnerships and collaborations. By connecting with other professionals who share my values, I can offer more comprehensive solutions to my clients and find new ways to scale sustainably.
This challenge is an opportunity for me to grow in ways that align with my core mission, and I’m excited about the steps I’m taking to overcome it.
