We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bobby Pettengill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Bobby with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I get my work ethic from practice and finding out what works best for how I function. My first attempt at dramatically improving my work ethic was when I used ChatGPT to come up with a google calendar schedule, consisting of 1 hour focus sections and 15 minute breaks, that I would follow. However, it led to me putting my tasks on a pedestal and caused me to mentally make it harder to focus on them when I hit burnout. My second, and current, attempt at improving my work ethic was done by making a morning routine which consisted of small and simple tasks like making my bed and doing 30 pushups. The list is designed to reward my brain with dopamine through accomplishment rather than through doom scrolling on Youtube shorts in the morning. Currently I’m finding this to be the most helpful improvement so far.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I run the Heroix youtube channel, a niche channel specializing in space simulator content. My videos revolve around Spaceflight Simulator, a 2D sandbox rocket-building game where players can explore planets and construct incredible space stations. I create videos showcasing monumental tasks and achievements that leave viewers speechless.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
There are so many skills I could list here, but the top three for me would be, the ability to learn fast, the ability to be interested in anything, and making connections. In a constantly evolving landscape of content creation, These three skills are probably my most important skills to have because it allows me to be able to take nearly any idea I have for a business or YouTube video and efficiently act on it. Currently I am also in my early stages of my journey, however my best advise would be to always be curious and always ask questions. If you can find interesting questions to ask about any topic, you can have a better understanding at what you need to learn about the topic to be able to do something useful with it.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Currently a challenge that I am facing is the fear of permanent burnout.
