We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lace. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lace below.
Hi Lace, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
We dont always get to choose our purpose. Mine was thrust on me when our second son, Caspian, was born still only a month before his due date.
With a toddler at home, I had little choice but to keep going. Every day, to wake up and take care of one son while desperately missing the other. It’s like being torn between two worlds. I was surviving, but only just.
As is common with grief and depression, none of my previous passions or hobbies brought me any joy.
Except one.
During Caspian’s pregnancy, I started crocheting a rather large throw. I had to stop for a while to take care of my wrists, but shortly after Cassy’s death, I picked up the blanket again. Before I knew it I had finished a blanket, a purse, and several toys for my 2 year old. While I was crocheting, my heart felt lighter.
I began crocheting more and more toys. I learned to make more things, and started selling them to friends on social media. Soon, I had special orders piling up, and I realized this was it. My purpose. To crochet for Caspian, in his memory, to help me heal, and to tell others his story.
So Cassy’s Cozy Creations was born.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My specialty when it comes to crochet is plushies, especially sea creatures. I also enjoy making spa/bath items, like washclothes, make-up removers, soap savers, etc.
I had the opportunity to be a vendor at a ladie’s night in Kirkland during the fall and absolutely loved it! I am currently rebuilding my inventory with the goal of attending more events as a vendor in the spring.
My business is very young and I’m still testing out different potential platforms for a website, but I will always be available on Instagram at cassyscozycreations and via email at [email protected].
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I don’t feel super qualified to answer this question haha but I’ll do my best.
Probably the most important thing I’ve learned as a fiber artist is to take care of yourself physically. It’s so important to rest your hands and ice them when necessary. Don’t work through the pain. You’ll build resilience over time, but only if you give yourself plenty of breaks in the beginning.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My spouse has been so supportive of my crochet journey. He’s always helping out around the house, taking care of our son, and verbally encouraging me to move forward with my business.
